•The first settlers of Abra came fromthe Bontocs and Ifugaos ancestry;others were from Tingguians orItnegs descendants.
•In the 15th century during the Spanish regimea barracks was built in Bangued to protectthe settlers who converted to Christianity fromTingguian attacks. A few years later, one ofthe well-known revolutionist, Gabriela Silangand her army came to Abra from Ilocos andcontinued their revolt. Then in 1763, GabrielaSilang was captured and hanged by theSpaniards.
•During the 18th century, Ilocos region wdivided into Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur,Abra became a political-military province1846 until the arrival of the Americans in1899.
•In 1908, Abra was again placed under thgovernance of the Ilocos Sur region.However on March 9, 1917, Abra wasre-established as a province. ConradoBalweg, the famous revolutionary priest othe Cordillera Tribes fought for the rightshis tribesmen. Then in 1987, the PhilippinGovernment created the CordilleraAdministrative Region that includes Abraa peace pact.
*The most spoken languages are Ilokano andItneg.*74% Speak Ilocano while 24% speak Itneg.*Most are descendants of Ilokano migrants.*Many are members of the tribe Tingguian.The growth rate of the population from 1990to 2010 is 1.2%.*For every household, there is an average of5 people.
Kawayan Festival•Kawayan festival means Bamboo Festival. It is thefiesta celebration of the provincial government ofAbra. Abra is located at northern part of thePhilippines. Abrenians tagged their fiesta asKawayan Festival because of abundancy ofbamboo’s in their region.
Dapil Festival•“Dapil Festival” is a festival on sugarcanewhich is one of the Abra’s main agriculturalproducts for the manufacture of a winecalled “basi”, vinegar, molasses called“muscovado”and candies.
Arya Abra Festival•It is a week-long celebration that showcases varioussectors/groups in the province. Each day is offered to aparticular group of persons as a way of honoring them forwhat they have done for the province of Abra. The culturalfestival “Arya Abra” has become a traditional yearlyfestival which is aimed not only for outsiders but also thenatives of Abra.
