For a good control of the electrical grid, it is mandatory to achieve a proper automation of its most critical facilities: substations. It is therefore necessary to use an open and flexible architecture for the automation system in order to allow an optimal adaptation to current and future needs.

Control architecture based on iRTU telecontrol units complies with the basis of flexibility and scalability, providing a complete solution open to any technology and communication media.

iRTU series products allow communicating remotely with multiple control centers while controlling all bays in a substation, using standard protocols (e.g. IEC61850, IEC60870-5-101, IEC60870-5-104, etc.)

The main product in the range is the iRTU, which operates as a Remote Terminal Unit with high scalability, for both process and input/output configuration capabilities. iRTUe auxiliary units allow simple expansion with both digital and analog additional inputs and outputs. Other products, such as the iGW units, are designed to be used as communication protocol concentrators, similar to the iRTU but without the direct input/output acquisition option.

  3. 3. iRTUAs the main RTU (or 1st level RTU), the iRTU acts as a communication gateway connecting the Substation tothe existing Control Centers through standard protocols (such as are IEC60870-5-101, IEC60870-5-104, DNP3.0,Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP). This main iRTU can also control directly parts of the substation (auxiliary servicesor bays), collect data from all devices in the substation (2nd level RTUs and IEDs), and report processed informationto Control Center/s.Acting as an slave RTU (or 2nd level RTU) its mission is to communicate with the main RTU via an standardprotocol (e.g. IEC60870-5-101/104, DNP3.0), in order to transfer all data from the bay IEDs.
