Is it required for devices in R&D Datacenter to remain switched ON during “idle” time? Does project team works 24X7? Is it required for devices in IT R&D labs to remain powered ON while engineers are at home and not using it? Does all devices being used 24x7x365? Do we have any automated system in place to enable individual team members to switch off the servers remotely when not in use or after completing the work? Can devices be powered ON without physically entering into lab? Can devices be SWITCHED OFF when not in use?

Frequent corruption of OS due to abrupt shutdown May result in important Data loss due to application not closed properly. Switching “ON” a huge number of devices after scheduled shutdown (through traditional ways) is a time consuming activity and requires a significant man hours.
  4. 4. 4 Best practice for power optimization in Lab • Completely Automated Solution. • Graceful Shutdown using scripted commands for OS shutdown. • Complete SMPS power shutdown after OS shutdown. • Schedule the activity based on single device, device groups. • User Access control – Define power control access rights to users in terms of what IT device can a user control…. • Initiative for Go Green. Stop unnecessary usage of Power by doing weekend / overnight shutdown of the idle and unused servers

No Switch off the power from PDU for a group of servers for complete shutdown Yes Switch ON the power from PDU for a group of servers. The servers will boot up. Datacenter admin to prepare a list of devices for overnight / weekend shutdown after discussion with device owners. Working hours start : Monday /weekday morning/ new assignment Servers Ready for USE
