UN Solutions Summit 2016: Humanitarian Tracker

Download to read offline

Syria Tracker was one of the Top 10 Global Innovations selected for the 2016 UN Solutions Summit.

Syria Tracker, the flagship project of Humanitarian Tracker, is the first open solution to combine crowdsource reports (such as eyewitness counts), machine learning, and data mining techniques of mainstream and social media on the same platform. It is language agnostic and can rapidly scale (through utilizing cloud technology, machine learning algorithms, and human expert curation) to deal with various sources of information and improve the ratio of signal to noise ratio. We believe our open platform is ready for use and can be scaled to provide a valuable solution for the sustainable development goals.

Editor's Notes

  • Thank you for having me here.

Early in my career, I was working in development in Syria. I met a woman, who at 45 years of age, went back to school and learned how to read and write. She so badly wanted to better herself and her family.

Little did she know that she not only changed her life, but mine as well.

This is the story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
  • When the conflict in Syria broke out, there was little news coming out of the country and people didn't know what was going on. So a few weeks later, a group of us got together and created Syria Tracker, an online open platform that combines crowdsourced reports with data mining and machine learning to give an holistic overview of what is happening in Syria and give ordinary people a chance to tell their story.

Over the past five and a half years, we’ve received over 150K reports from the ground.. People can submit reports through our website, e-mail or twitter @syriatracker
These categories you see were dictated by the reports received and have evolved over time to include everything from human rights violations, to disease outbreaks, refugee information and development or relief needs  In terms of news and social media, we’ve also mined over 650K news articles from more 2K sources (including pro-regime outlets) and over 680 million social media posts (Twitter, FB, etc.) covering similar topics.
  • Putting it all together, Syria Tracker has become one of the most trusted sources of information on Syria. It has been quoted by the IFCC as the longest standing crowdsource effort to-date. Covered many events missed by media. And even received a report of the first case of Polio, a disease that was eradicated 14 years earlier.
  • Working with our partners, we were able to analyze the data and derive insights, such as civilian targeting and the rising proportion of female killing in Syria as reported on here by Mariane Pearl
  • Additionally, our data has been used by Official bodies, including USAID, the State Department, and mainstream media,  to name a few. That, ladies and gentlemen, is ordinary people doing extra ordinary things.
  • And today, I'm here on behalf of every man, woman and child that risked their lives to submit a report to Syria Tracker, asking for your help, not only to continue this work in Syria, but also grow and replicate it elsewhere.
We have a proven track record and our work can be replicated to support global goals, humanitarian events, and Crises, plus we are a registered 501c3 volunteer-based international organization   We need intellectual support in the form of data scientists and software engineers, financial support to compensate our volunteers and our work, and a solid commitment from the UN and other organizations to share data, because without data, this work would not be possible.

Thank you and I look forward to working with you.
