  2. 2. I walk merrily to my mailbox. The key slides into the lock. Whoa. You have to be kidding. <ul><ul><li>How much junk mail do I receive weekly? Monthly? Annually? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>How much junk mail does the average American receive? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>What is the environmental impact of junk mail in this country? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Is there a remedy to this situation? </li></ul></ul>

What is Junk Mail? <ul><li>Junk mail is the result of direct marketing campaigns designed to get you to buy a product or service. </li></ul><ul><li>When you purchase a product or service and give the company your name and address, the chances are you are being added to one or more mailing lists used for direct marketing. </li></ul><ul><li>Your name, address, and other contact information, as well as the type of product or service, is entered into a computer data base. </li></ul><ul><li>The business who collected your information will use it to solicit more business from you, or will rent out their lists to other businesses. </li></ul><ul><li>Lists are valuable, and renting lists is big business. </li></ul>

Where do I fit in to the Grand Scheme? <ul><li>Every day, I checked the mail, sorted it, and set my junk mail aside. </li></ul><ul><li>After three weeks, I weighed my junk mail. </li></ul><ul><li>The results? 3.75 pounds of junk mail. </li></ul><ul><li>Roughly translated, that is about 52.17 pounds of junk mail a year. </li></ul>
  5. 5. So what? I just throw it away. <ul><li>Most people do! </li></ul><ul><li>The average adult in the United States receives 41 pounds of junk mail a year. </li></ul><ul><li>44 percent of that junk </li></ul><ul><li>mail goes to the </li></ul><ul><li>landfill unopened. </li></ul>

Timber! <ul><li>More than 100 million trees are destroyed each year to produce junk mail. </li></ul><ul><li>42 percent of timber harvested nationwide becomes pulpwood for paper. </li></ul><ul><li>The pulp industry is the third-largest industrial greenhouse gas emitter (after the chemical and steel industries). </li></ul><ul><li>The energy used to produce and dispose of junk mail exceeds 2.8 million cars. </li></ul><ul><li>More than 4 million tons of junk mail are produced each year. </li></ul><ul><li>40 percent of the solid mass that makes up our landfills is paper and paperboard waste.   </li></ul>

Water <ul><li>The pulp and paper industry is the single largest consumer of water used in industrial activities in developed countries </li></ul><ul><li>About 28 billion gallons of water are wasted to produce junk mail each year. </li></ul><ul><li>I Recycle! </li></ul><ul><li>Junk mail inks have high concentrations of heavy metals, making the paper difficult to recycle. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Today vs. Tomorrow <ul><li>Today I receive 5.17 pounds of junk mail per year. </li></ul><ul><li>My junk mail alone is equivalent to .65 trees and 182.6 gallons of water a year! </li></ul><ul><li>What a waste! </li></ul><ul><li> </li></ul>

Fill it out again … this time as ‘temporary move’. </li></ul>

It is available in English and Spanish. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>When you buy something from a mail order catalog, your transaction is likely to be reported to Abacus, owned by DoubleClick Digital Advertising. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>There are two ways to opt out of the Abacus database.
