7 Days Camping in Albania
Start Date: 25/03/2011
Price: 150 Euro
Tour Type: Adventure
Activities: Camping / Sailing / Diving
Tour Days: 7 Days
With so many camping opportunities available, one of the most difficult aspects of our camping tour can be deciding where to go. The easiest way
to narrow your selection is to first determine what you want to do there: fish, hike, dive, mountain bike, boat, raft, etc. Some areas, like the
national parks, preserved beaches, white sand beaches, caves, sea cliffs, lend themselves more to diving than hiking. Other camping areas offer
Next, determine what amenities you want in your preferred campsite. Amenities will vary from campground to campground. Do you want an
improved campsite with barbecue grills, running water and toilets? Or would you prefer an unimproved campground with only a fire pit. Some
facilities may even include hot showers and full utility hookups.

Vlora – Llogara – Palasa Dhërmi
Leaving Tirana we drive to Vlora, on our specialized overland vehicles.
Approximately mid‐morning we visit the interesting ancient city of Oricum. We
stop at the convenient stopping point of the journey between Greece and Italy.
Ancient sources (for instance, Herodotus) describe it as a limen, or harbor.
Park of Llogara
Continuing, we drive to the highpoint of the national park of Llogara, (Ceraunian
Mountains) at about 2,018m of altitude, with interesting crown shapes, resulting
from the tides of wind. Pisha Flamur” (Flag Pine), a rare monument of nature
with scientific and touristic values is an astonishing example of it. This park offers
a fine and attractive landscape and characteristic areas with dominant points. Its
vegetation consists mainly of such conifers as the black pine and ash‐tree.
Afterwards, we follow to Drimates beach, which offers the perfect escape from
the stresses of everyday life. In front of us, more than 4 miles of spectacular
coastline where, according to the legend, Julius Caesar fought the hardest battle
during his war with Pompey.
Further along the South Coast, approximately 20 minutes away, we stop at
Dhermi village. Laid back and beautiful, unique and rustic, Dhermi is Heaven. If
it's nightlife you're after, you've come to the right place: top clubs and on‐form
Monastery of Saint Mary Panajia – Vuno Jal
Today we wake up very early to observe the monastery of Saint Mary Panajia,
on top of the village.
We continue to Vuno, one the most beautiful spots of Albanian Ionian coast, or
Albanian Riviera. The village is cut across by the national road VloraSaranda
and is situated on the mountainside. The houses made of stone look over a
wonderful olive plantation and after the olive trees, some 200 meters below
lies the Ionian Sea. Beach, mountain, river, beautiful nature and warm people,
this is one of our favorite places in Albania.
10 minutes later we will be in Jal beach. As close to a miniature version of 'The
Beach' as you'll get, the Jal camping area has a great vibe, movies, music,
cocktails, chilling and an internet connection. Full of young people, being at
absolute harmony with nature, Jal gives you that unique quietness and
secluded rustic backpacker feel that you dream about.
Ened, the owner of the camping in Jal will help with anything you need and is
just a genuinely nice bloke to sit and have a chat with or just stay silent to enjoy
Jal’s aura and the thoughts it provokes. The camping has hammocks, a small
bar (all well looked after and clean), and is a little piece of paradise.
Accommodation overnight at the Camping.
Jal – Gjipe – Pirate Cave
After breakfast at the camping, we board our canoe for a threehour trip to
Gjipe Canyon about 3 km and Pirate's cave about 5 km distance.
The Gjipe Beach is one of the most beautiful and bestpreserved beaches in
Albania. The trip from Jal beach to Gjipe Canyon is an enchanting paradise,
breathtaking landscape of natural attractions, white sand beaches, caves, sea
cliffs. After roughly 3 hours through the hidden beaches, rare sea cliffs and
forms, we will reach Gjipe Canyon, hike up the Canyon and savor panoramic
views of the stunning cliffs.
Then we board our canoe again to Pirate’s Cave, 10 minutes distance away.
Pirate's Cave is a wonderful natural cave in Albania, which became famous
through the homonymous film and book by Peter Mark. Entrance is located on
a perpendicular rock and the cave is accessible both from the sea, achieving
relatively large depths, and from the mainland. Pirate's cave is one of the most
valuable touristic attractions of the region, which takes you back to the
medieval history of Albania, where the pirates hid. Accommodation overnight
optional at Jal Camping or Gjipe Canyon.
Livadhe – Himarë – Pilur
Breakfast at the camping and then continue to Livadhe beach.
This sandy and rock strewn beach is one of the quietest beaches, where the
shallow, offshore sandbar is present, the swimming and boogie boarding is
After relaxing and swimming in Livadhe we continue our tour towards the small
city of Himara, which has two neighborhoods: Old Himara built on the hill and
New Himara in the gulf of Spille. Himara has four beaches: Filikuri, Spille,
Llamani, Potami and Livadhet. They are all gravel beaches with deep, clear
waters. The city comes to life during the summer touristic season, when visitors
take up residence in the hotels or in rented houses. Himara is the ancient
residence and city of the Illyrian Kaon clan. It was settled in the fifth century
B.C. and its name is of Pellazgë (preIllyrian) origin. There are several religious
sites to visit such as the Church of Shën Maria e Athalit, the Church of
Cassiopeia, the Church of All Saints and the House of Lilo Llazari, which has
been turned into a cultural monument. Himara is known for the endless olive
groves, the hospitality and the pride of its inhabitants since early antiquity as
the ancient historians Plinius, Stravon, Thoucidides, Homer and others have
pointed out in their works. Himara has always been a favorite place of visit for
many famous foreigners, among them scholars such as Lord Byron, W. Leake
and Evliya Celebi.
A unique village on the mountain will be our next destination. It’s the village of
Pilur, located on 1.350 m of altitude, on a beautiful landscape of forest and a
great panorama over the entire Ionian Coast. In this village we will find old
Albanian characteristic houses, which remain inhabited as principal houses for
the local residents. Accomodation overnight at Ecoturist Village, Portopalermo.
Portopalermo – Llaman – Qeparo
We wake up early in the morning to visit the Castle of Ali Pashë Tepelena, built
on a small peninsula in the tectonic gulf of Porto Palermo. The castle was built
in the shape of a triangle and its walls are 20 m high. Ali Pasha dedicated this
castle to his wife, Vasiliqia. It is said that it was built on top of the ruins of an
After relaxing and swimming in Llaman, one of the rarest and clearest
Mediterranean beaches, we move towards the village of Qeparo. Qeparo is
located close to the gulf of Porto Palermo and has its own distinctive beach.
Old Qeparo, built on the hillside, has several historical sites including the
threestory Tower of Ali Pasha, the Monastery of Shën Dhimitri, and the House
of Minella Gjika.
Before the afternoon, we will use the catamaran (optional) and sail to Borsh,
one of the largest beaches of the Albanian Riviera, with its clear waters
stretching for almost 6 km. Several hotels, clubs, discotheques, and restaurants
are built along the length of the beach. The hospitality of the villagers and the
traditional dish of grilled lamb are distinctive features found in Borsh. Return to
Saranda – Butrint Ksamil
After a very early wake up, we continue the trip to Saranda which is one of the
most important touristic attractions of the Albanian Riviera. It is situated on an
open sea gulf of the Ionian Sea in the Mediterranean, 2 nautical miles from the
Greek island of Corfu.
Near Saranda we find the remains of the ancient city of Butrint, a UNESCO
World Heritage site and one of the most important archeological parks in
Albania and the Balkans, the ruins of ancient town of Onchesmus,
Ethnographic Museum, the “Blue Eye” natural spring, ruins of Foinike in Finiq
village, the small Castle of Ali Pasha in Vrine village, the Church of “Saint Kolli”
in Mesopotam village as well as the beautiful Ksamil Islands. Saranda is full of
clubs, restaurants and bars where tourists can enjoy good food and drinks.
After visiting the ancient city of Butrint, we will relax and swim in the wonderful
waters of the islands of Ksamil. Prepare for dinner and night on the tents.
