RECENT PROJECT • Date September 2010 – March 2011 • Topic Cloud Tracking Solution in Windows Azure • Type Project • Keywords Windows Azure, Tracking, Mobile devices, Cloud Computing • Abstract IT solutions often reach a critical performance limit due to limited resources in productive environments. By adding the complexity of spatial data processing and -storage, this critical point is lowered again! This particular project, the development of a tracking application for mobile devices, was therefore based on a cloud computing environment and the cloud-benefits (reliability, scalability) were implemented effectively! The result is a multifunctional, scalable tracking solution which runs on all major smartphones and can be adapted to special customer needs. The basic version supports Symbian-, Android- and JavaME-supporting devices with external or internal GPS receiver. The required minimum location information are visualized in an ASP.NET web-application.
  6. 6. • Date Mai 2009 – September 2009 • Topic OpenSource web-mapping solution • Type Project• Keywords OpenSource, web-mapping, OGC Standards, Spatial database • Abstract Depending on the scope and the target group of an application or service, visualization of data is a more or less important requirement. In this project, sensor data with location information had to be represented in a PostgreSQL database and visualized through a JSP web application. Beside the measured values at each location, the network of sensors and its visualization was an important criteria. OpenLayers was used to merge the different data-sources like the sensor data, geonames and OpenStreetMap background map data. To guarantee the interoperability of the application, it was designed to support OGC WMS and WFS services. The implementation of a GeoServer ensured the usability of the sensor data in third-party (OGC WMS supporting) applications. To round up user experience, an AJAX function was developed to query gazetteer information from matching services and visualize city names, elevation etc. on the map.
  7. 7. • Date November 2007 – September 2008 • Topic Representation of 3D-Gebäudemodellen in spatial databases • Type Master-thesis• Keywords Oracle spatial, Java, User Interface Design, Building modelling • Abstract Nowadays, we know about great 3d-modellers, geoinformatic scientists, architects, etc. but they all face problems and build solutions from their point of view: While the 3d-modeller is able to build visual models, and doesn’t care about projections and coordinate systems, the geoinformatic scientist is in most cases not able to build these advanced visual models. Geography, and of course Geoinformatics, are located at the border to many other disciplines like computer science, architecture, geology,... Not at least because of this, one approach is to bring them together to achieve better results and develop more efficient solutions for certain problems. Filling this gap between geography, architecture and computer science brings up a wide range of new possibilities to use this data: Building energy analysis can be done on the web, models of buildings for google earth can be created automatically, indoor routing services for big buildings can be set up within a few minutes and much more. This master thesis concerned itself with ways to make three dimensional building models interoperable. To achieve this goal, a solution was developed to convert and store these models in databases. One challenge was the data extraction from 3D-models (e.g. dxf) and the other challenge was to build a sample solution to show up the great potential of such a data model. In this case, a visualization of the sample data in virtual globe, using a custom java tool as well as the spatial operators which are implemented in the spatial databases, was realized. Further the thesis covered the methodology of systems, modeling and spatial databases. The work flow to achieve the mentioned goals was illustrated with an example building. At the end, the sample building was stored as a set of three dimensional geometries in a spatial database and the data was visualized in a virtual globe.
