Planarians

 1. 1. Planarian Regeneration
 2. 2.

Can be split lengthwise or crosswise and regenerate there full form again, but now with two separate planarians.

Are a flatworm found mostly in lakes or ponds, but can live in saltwater and freshwater.

Very small only 1 to 50 millimeters

Are hermaphrodites which means they also produce male and female organs and combine gametes in sexual reproduction

Sexual reproduction also increases genetic diversity.

Planarians can regenerate from 1/8-10 of there body

Flat Worms
 3. 3.

When a planarian will lose its tail on purpose, there are several steps that happen.

The first step: A thin layer of epidemic cells cover the wounded area

The second step: Differentiation occurs when stem cells divide and create fully differentiated daughter cells that will be used in repairing tissue.

Stem cells are basic cells that are able to turn into specialized types of cells for re-growth. They come from adult tissue or from embryos.

Planarians have clusters of stem cells which move to the wound.

Regenerated parts of this flat worm can only be differentiated by the pigment in the regenerated area.

Planarians try to move away from light so they have photo receptors on there body. When regenerated the brain most develop before the photo receptors can sense the light Regeneration
 4. 4. Other facts

They can regenerate because of one reason: One is that they have not evolved enough yet to be complex. (even though they are one of the most basic animals to have a nervous system)

Need a minimum of 10000 cells to regenerate

Mammals can not regenerate

Regenerating animals are usually invertebrates

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8F1xkdQJnw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ew3yupNMF8&feature=related
