The Shot

  1. 1. quot;The Shotquot; Depo-Provera
  2. 2. What is it? The Shot is a hormonal method, which means it alters your body’s hormonal cycle to prevent pregnancy. You go to your doctor or health clinic to receive the shot, and you must be sure you go every 10-13 weeks for a new shot, so it does not wear off.
  3. 3. How Effective Is It? If used perfectly: 99.7% When you factor in human error: 97% That means out of 100 couples that use only the shot, in 1 year, 3 would get pregnant. It offers NO PROTECTION AGAINST STDs.
  4. 4. How Does It Work? The shot works by preventing a woman’s ovaries from releasing an egg each month. It also thickens the cervical mucus, helping to keep sperm out of the uterus. Finally, it causes the lining of the uterus to be thinner, which inhibits implantation.
  5. 5. Advantages With the shot, there is nothing to remember every day, only once every 10-13 weeks. The shot can be used by women who cannot take the hormone estrogen. The shot can be used while breastfeeding.
  6. 6. Disadvantages The shot can cause irregular or late periods. It offers NO STD PROTECTION. If you have any side effects from the shot, they will last for 12 weeks, until the shot wears off.
  7. 7. Side Effects The shot can cause weight change, depression, headaches, hair loss or hair growth on face and body, nervousness and skin rash.
