Shadowing a doctor

 1. 1. Shadowing a Doctor By Holly McKelvey
 2. 2. Why?

I developed a strong interest in the sciences this year

Medicine is often a field that Biologists and Chemists continue into, and one that I feel drawn to because it gives so much to the patients.

 3. 3. Initial Expectations

I didn’t expect to be able to see many (if any) patients due to doctor-patient confidentiality regulations

As a result, I expected to only see the paperwork part of a medical career (of which there is a great deal)

 4. 4. Finding a Doctor

Increased confidentiality restrictions have made it more difficult for doctors to let people shadow them

I asked at City of Hope, but they had eliminated their shadowing program in the last year

It took a long time to finally get in touch with a doctor, because their schedules are extremely busy

 5. 5. Finally!

At last and to my great relief, my classmate Mari Gallegos helped me to make plans to shadow her mother, Dr. Angela Nossett

Dr. Nosset works at both a public clinic and a private clinic

I was able to follow her in the private clinic, but gain insight into public clinics as well because of her work experience.

 6. 6. Public vs. Private

Confidentiality regulations within Public

These protect the privacy of patients almost to a fault

Procedural regulations within Private

There is extensive paperwork for the doctors to get permission to administer medications, which delays how quickly the patient receives medicine.

 7. 7. Dr Nossett

I was able to sit in on all of her patient sessions

Patients tended to be unperturbed by my presence, so I got a genuine glimpse at patient-doctor interaction.

I admired the highly respectful way in which Dr. Nossett approached each of her patients’ ailments.

 8. 8. Dr Nevarez

Dr Nossett referred me to a fellow doctor, Dr Theresa Nevarez in Harbor City.

I shadowed Dr Nevarez in a public clinic, so I was confined to her office due to confidentiality restrictions

Nevertheless, she and one of the residents took the time to talk to me about their careers, and some of the cases that they are treating right now.

 9. 9. Harbor City

Demographics:

White 48.02%

Black 13.74%

Asian 13.94%

American Indian 0. 42%

Other 23.88%

Hispanic 46.43%

"Harbor City, CA Detailed Profile." Harbor City, California (CA) Community Profile: City Data, Resources, Demographics. Fast Forward, Inc. 1 June 2007 <>.
 10. 10. Monterey Park

Demographics:

White 21.3%

Black 0.4%

Asian 61.8%

American Indian 0.7%

Other 12.4%

Hispanic 28.9%

"Profile of General Demographic Characteristics (Population Data)." City of Monterey Park - Homepage. 2000. U.S. Census Bureau. 1 June 2007 <>.
 11. 11. Resident Lecture

I attended a lecture in Harbor City that was designed as an educational lecture for the residents

It was divided into three sections, all instructional:

Foot ulcers, and what bandages are on hand in the hospital to treat them

Analyses by the residents of medical articles

Case studies, in which the residents examined ER cases and how the attending doctor handled them

 12. 12. Surprises

To be able to sit in with the patients while shadowing Dr Nossett was a great surprise

While shadowing Dr Nevarez, I was surprised at the amount of advice that I received
