The absence of water treatment facilities for heavy industry 2. The discharge of untreated rainwater from the city, agriculture and industry 3. Large scale of accumulated sediment on the bottom of lakes and rivers

Conclusion With a transparent and accountable government, socially responsible and community- focused business and individuals who care about the eco-system they live in, it is possible to turn Nizhny Novgorod into an example of a city living in accordance with sustainable development concept! The situation in Nizhny Novgorod can be called catastrophic. However it cannot be called irreversible Some steps have already been taken on all levels: governmental, business and individual. The main focus should be on supporting those steppes and expanding on their basis Due to Russian regional politics realities much has to be done by the federal government, in order for the regions to follow and promote sustainable development
