Advances in telecommunications technologies have made everyday tasks simpler and communication faster. This is obvious as we consider the communications industry's evolution from mobilized voice to mobile messaging to the smartphone era to now the mobile cloud. With each industry wave things have moved faster, cycles have shortened, and the pace of investment and innovation has accelerated. The mobile cloud era has the potential to be the fastest and most powerful of all because it allows virtually everything to be linked and immediately accessible (i.e., mobilized) due to Internet Protocol ("IP")-based networks. Currently, narrowband legacy networks are being abandoned in favor of high-speed next generation broadband IP networks. The expansion of IP-based wired and wireless networks provide greater choice to consumers and businesses in how they connect and communicate. Upgrading to IP-based networks will ensure consumer demands can be met, enabling the Internet to evolve to its full potential. By fully embracing IP, policymakers can create an environment of regulatory certainty that promotes greater private sector investment and deployment in communications infrastructure as well as the devices, services and apps that use it.
