One aspect of the test methodology used by AV-Test is to test the “Time to Protect” aspect of each product. With the amount of new threats introduced (every 1.5 seconds) today, vendors have to be able to source, analyze and provide protection for new threats that they currently cannot identify. Therefore, AV-Test re-tests the threats after 1 hour to determine if a vendor has added new protection capabilities for any threats that were not detected/blocked during the initial test run. As you can see, WFBS performed over twice as well as the other products and ten times better than Symantec. What this tells you is that the Smart feedback, Analysis and Correlation of new threats with Trend Micro allows us to provide new protections faster that any of these vendors. Why did OfficeScan not perform as well, this could be mostly from different implementations of Smart feedback by the products.
Summary of the feature SMART SCAN Up to 80% of security technology is stored on the web security server rather than on each computer, this is maintained by Trend Micro so you can be sure it is always up to date, Remaining 20% is kept on your local computer. SMART FEEDBACK Trend Micro has a unique position in the security industry – having millions of sensors globally distributed feeding threat information back to our large network of threat collection systems. WEB THREAT PROTECTION With one of the largest domain-reputation databases in the world, Trend Micro’s Web reputation technology tracks the credibility of Web sites by assigning a reputation score based on factors such as a Web site’s age, historical location changes and indications of suspicious activities discovered through malware behavior analysis. Behaviour Monitoring Behaviour monitoring keeps an eye on applications to identify any abnormal activity that indicates malicious behavior. POP3 Anti-Spam Provides anti-spam protection at the end point for customers who do not run a mail server and have email delivered to users via their Internet Service Provider. Client Firewall Provides protection against network worms and intrusions. Instant Messaging Content Filtering Provides outbound content filtering protection and restriction of sensitive corporate data in the form of words or phrases being sent out through chat sessions. USB Device Threat Prevention A function of WFBS’s Behavior Monitoring feature, USB Device Control protects against malware that could potentially auto-install from a R/W USB device. Autorun files are intercepted and blocked and a popup warns the user the autorun has been denied. Users can choose to continue or prevent the install. Wireless Network Protection Wi-Fi Advisor plug-in protects against Evil Twin attacks and wireless access points being hacked maliciously. It provides security-level settings to support different encryption modes of on-corporate or off-corporate Wi-Fi users.

For example, with Trend Micro WFBS 7: At T=0min, 186 threats were prevented while 14 threats were missed. Of the 14 threats missed at T=0min, 6 were prevented at T=60min (6 of 14 equals 42.9%).
