7.3 rational exponents

  1. 1.  nth roots can be written using rational exponents.  For example:  In general, for any integer n greater than 1.
  2. 2.  Not always of the form 1/n.    The denominator of the exponent is the index of the radical! “The bottom goes in the crack!”
  3. 3.  Write in radical form:
  4. 4.  Write in exponential form:
  5. 5.  Rewrite in radical form first.  Evaluate the radical.  Raise to the power.  Example:  93/2
  6. 6.  Evaluate.  32-2/5  642/3
  7. 7.  Evaluate:  493/2  16-3/4
  8. 8.  Rewrite in radical form first.  Simplify the radical part.  Raise everything to the power.  Example:  (36x4)3/2
  9. 9.  Evaluate.  (a8)-3/4  (216b9)5/3
  10. 10.  Evaluate:  (9x4)-5/2  (16y4)3/4
