R&B Music Magazine - My Music Magazine

Published on

For my music magazine, I had to look at the history of R&B music and the culture and the target audience so that I know what to include in my magazine and not to go off the target audience. Also, I had to talk about how R&B has changed over the years and how Mise En Scene is used in R&B Music.

R&B Music Magazine - My Music Magazine

  1. 1. Task 1
  2. 2.  It is a genre of popular African-American music that originated in the 1940s Early 1950s, the term rhythm and blues was frequently applied to blues records Starting in the mid-1950s, after this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll, the term "R&B" became used to refer to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music By the 1970s, rhythm and blues was used as a blanket term for soul and funk 1980s, a newer style of R&B developed, becoming known as "Contemporary R&B"
  3. 3.  1980’s - With the transition from soul and disco to R&B, artists such as MJ were able to achieve crossover appeal in popular music which had previously been dominated by white rock musicians. 1990’s - Though popular in the1980s, quiet storm had remained a fixture in there cordings of popular artists such as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston in the dawn of the 1990s. 2000’s - The continued popularity of contemporary R&B is seen in the global success of established artists such as Beyoncé and Usher, whose careers began in the late 1990s and continued in the dawn of the new millennium.
  4. 4.  R&B music tends to target teenagers to young adults, but some older generations like R&B too By listening to R&B music, you can also identify the audience they aim at By looking at these singers dress sense and the way their body language is, you can tell what people they aim their music at as teenagers represent themselves in a similar way with the bling and clothing.
  5. 5.  Costume: Casual clothes such as: snapbacks, jeans, hoodies, polo’s, party shirts. These are the types of clothes that R&B singer’s would be wearing with maybe some smart depending on the song. Props: A lo of ‘bling’ and plenty of jewellery like: rings, necklaces. A lot of make up too on women to make them stand out. Location: Places like a dance/night club or a big house or places with graffiti.
  6. 6.  R&B has been portrayed through the media in both a negative and positive way. A negative way because of all the things the artists get involved in outside of music i.e. drugs or Chris Brown and Rihanna’s ‘incident’ gives R&B a bad name. But a positive way as they produce good music and these artists sell millions of records each month with their music getting into the top 10 of the charts!
  7. 7. Task 2
  8. 8. The colour of clothing and backgrounds they are in are quite light which suggest their music isn’t dull and can put people in good moods. The clothes thesesingers are wearingrelates to theirtarget audience asthese are the typesof clothes theywear. The tattoos some of these artists have makes their audience know they are in the R&B genre of music as this is the types of things they would have.
