Many of us get tired of making resolutions altogether. Reason being, we were usually unable to live up to what we mentioned in our resolution list. Well, for those who made a list last year, take a good look at it now and ask yourself: How many points have you achieved so far for the whole year? The thing about making resolutions for yourself is that you want to achieve it by the end of the year, isn’t it? People usually put very high hopes and high expectations on themselves, and hence tend to make some resolutions that are sometimes considered not realistic and impossible. Our advice to you is to make reasonable goals that are achievable and always have an action plan for your resolutions. Actions speak louder than words, no? Anyhow, we have a better idea. Health is the greatest wealth we could ever get on earth. Why not make a health resolution list for a change? After years of slacking, we believe you want to put your health back on track and maintain a healthy lifestyle, don’t you? Here are a few examples and tips on setting health resolutions in order for you to achieve a healthy 2010. Wake up early We understand that most of you will have to wake up early during the weekdays for work or school but prefer to sleep longer during the weekends. Why not practice waking up early during the weekends as well? Your day will feel longer and you will have more time Page 3 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited
  4. 4. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ for yourself during the weekends. Just remember to get 8 hours of sleep and that will be sufficient for your health. Take breakfast every morning Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, many tend to skip breakfast to lose weight. Skipping breakfast is a definite failed approach to weight loss. On the other hand, some of you skip breakfast due to lack of time as you’re rushing for work or school. Practice waking up early and you will have time to have a good breakfast. If you’re too lazy to prepare breakfast or there’s no one who can do it for you, have a power breakfast instead. By consuming plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and juices, it helps to refresh your body and increase your energy for a good start of the day. Stay away from oily or heavy food, please! 8 glasses of water daily It is common knowledge that we need to drink 8 glasses of water every day. But have you been doing it? The accurate amount of water you need to take should be eight to ten 8-ounce glasses of water per day which is equivalent to 2 quarts or 1.8 litres of water. Having sufficient intake of water helps to cleanse away toxins from your body, keeps your mind sharp and prevents dehydration. By replacing all other beverage consumption with water, you can also reduce your calorie intake and control your weight! Be active All you need to do is stay on the go. If you’re working on the 3rd floor of the building, climb the staircase instead of waiting for the elevator. If you’re going to have lunch 2 blocks away, walk to the restaurant instead of driving there. You can keep yourself fit and also save some time that you might use finding a parking lot. By moving a lot, you will feel more activated and energized instead of falling into the lazy mode. Stress management Make an effort to slot in a stress management program for yourself. How to begin? You may try by having 5 minutes deep breathing exercises every morning and at night before going to bed. Also, take yoga or Pilates classes twice a week after work or you can do some stretching in front of the TV to increase your flexibility. If something is bothering you, do find someone to speak your heart out instead of bottling up everything in yourself all the time. Everyone has different ways of releasing stress, so, find your way and work it out. Feeling good about your life is vital to a healthy state of mind and body. Lend a helping hand You have a healthy body and a happy life; why not lend a helping hand to others who don’t? Be a volunteer during one of your weekends at an orphanage or old folks' home. What about doing a blood donation? You’re not just helping someone out there but also Page 4 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited
  5. 5. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ doing a good deed. On the other hand, you can even join the volunteer force at SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to help the unfortunate animals. Still not too sure what to do? Let’s just start with helping your mother to do house chores at home! Stay away from drugs, alcohol and cigarettes You should have heard this too many times now. Refrain from experimenting with drugs, drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes. These activities are extremely addictive. Once you start, it takes lots of motivation and endurance to quit. You even know there’s a huge consequence to pay for this action. So why start it in the first place? Drinking, smoking and drugs was never the “in” thing to do. Stay away! There are many more health resolutions that you can make for yourself to achieve a healthy lifestyle throughout the year but please bear in mind, do not overdo your resolutions and end up making it difficult for yourself. Enforcing strict rules to achieve your health resolutions does not help but will only end up making your plans backfire. Instead, have good respect for your body and soul and savour every moment of your life! References: 1. Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook by Nancy Clark, Edition: 4, 2008 (pg.60 - 61) 2. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Major Illness With fitness gyms mushrooming all over the country and exercise facilities that are more easily accessible everywhere (e.g.: condominiums and parks), freely available information on health as well as exercise, and healthier eating options, it is not surprising to see an increased the growing fitness craze and interest of keeping oneself fit. The accessibility to healthcare services among the public has become one of the main focuses on Malaysia healthcare development. Knowledge and empowerment for better understanding in health also underline the hard work needed to see more prevention of diseases are taken place. However, research showed that many chronic diseases are closely linked to lifestyles. An estimated 80% of heart disease, stroke as well as type 2 diabetes, and 40% of cancer, can be avoided if common lifestyle risk factors were eliminated. Yet, most of us are still grappling with lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and cancer. These chronic illnesses can affect the productivity and ultimately, the economy of the nation (not to mention one’s health). Learn more … Poor Diet Most of the people now are leading unhealthy lifestyles. To save time, we fancy eating fast food or processed foods. Fast foods and processed foods equal fast eating to save precious time from having to prepare and cook meals, all this while maintaining the extremely busy schedule. We can say that “work is my life.” Research showed that at least 95% of Americans have at least one nutrient deficiency in their diet, as they always eat high calories food like animal fats, meat and bread [1]. Moreover, Asia, which is deemed a food paradise, also is facing influx of unhealthy fast foods and some of Asia’s own cuisines are unhealthy. These high-fat, high-cholesterol and low-vitamin diets are wreaking and overloading our bodies with toxics instead of nutrients, eventually causing problems like obesity, hypertension, diabetes and cancer. 7. 7. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ is due to overweight and obesity [2], which can be caused by inactivity. We need to stay active to burn fats, increase heart’s ability to pump blood and increase our immune system. Nowadays, people tend to spend time on computer games, cell phones, video games, television, and movies, instead of exercise. Low levels of physical activity with high calorie-consumption will lead to future healthy complications such as being overweight, increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and exposing one to premature mortalities (including hypertension, diabetes and cancer). Studies also found that sedentary lifestyle may speed up the rate of ageing. Chronic Stress Today, stress is known killer. In America, stress-related medical problems consist of 75-90% of doctors’ consultation [3]. The number of children, teenagers, college students and employees under stress are increasing. It is worrying to know that stress has the ability to cause Alzheimer’s disease, ageing, high blood pressure, substance abuse, sleeping as well as eating disorders. A person will be prone to health complications since chronic stress weakens the body’s immune system, making the body more susceptible to damage. Thus, having the means to reduce stress and leading a more active lifestyle are important to prevent chronic and lifelong diseases. Detructive Habits Some of the people ‘kill’ their “pain” by turning to tobacco, alcohol or drugs. The damage? Simply irreversible. In year 2000, there are about 4.8 million smoking-related premature deaths in the US. Smoking increases the risk of at least 15 types of cancer, including nasopharynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, lip, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, lung, oesophagus, pancreas, uterine cervix, kidney, bladder, stomach and acute myeloid leukaemia [4]. Meanwhile, alcohol increases the risk of cancer of mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, breast and liver cancers. Both guys who consume more than two alcoholic drinks and females who consume one alcoholic drink in a day have a higher chance to contract those diseases. There are scientific evidences showing that about one-third of the cancer deaths in the US every year are due to unhealthy diet and low physical activity. Studies estimated that diabetes will increase more than double, from 5.6% in year 2005 to 12% in year 2050 [5]. Additionally, WHO estimated the number of overweight people globally will increase to 2.3 billion by 2015, and at least 700 million will be obese. These indicate that the death statistics in relation to lifestyle diseases are still increasing, continuously. In fact, most of these diseases, including cancers, are caused by avoidable factors which could be preventable (unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, stress, tobacco use, alcohol and drug abuse). Herbal medicines (often looked upon as traditional or folk medicine) of recent times are making big pharmaceutical companies ponder upon the prospects it holds to deliver. Modern drugs are highly specific and can effectively treat many health conditions. They are generally composed of a single synthetic chemical compound. Herbal medicine, on the other hand, consists of a mixture of active natural chemical constituents from plants. The phyto-chemicals act in synergy to confer therapeutic effects in healing diseases. However, can herbal medicines provide solutions to all diseases? Is it suitable to use herbal medicine in all scenarios? Not really. Consider a case of an emergency situation where a patient has elevated levels of blood pressure which is life threatening. In such case, time would be of prime importance and pharmaceuticals come very much in handy for a quick fix. Herbal medicines generally target on long term health benefits. They take a more holistic approach to the overall health of the body instead of treating symptoms per se. Herbalists use extracts of different parts of a plant such as the roots, fruits or leaves in preparing herbal medicines. In herbal medicine concept, the interaction (synergism) among the various bio-active phyto-chemicals a herbal extract of a single herb (or the synergism between few herbs in a single herbal medicine) plays essential roles in improving the healing process and also Page 8 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited
  9. 9. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ reducing toxicity. For example is garlic extract. The extract not only provides nutritional support, but also confers therapeutic properties such as immunostimulant and antiviral. Gradually, patients develop body resistance towards the disease and gain an overall healthy physical state. With all these multiple functions within just a single herb, herbalists firmly hold onto the theory of drug synergism. It can be briefly described that their notion is to prevent as well as cure a health state. Herbalists try to work out the extensive interaction of herbs to achieve complete health care rather than trying to seek a remedy for a single condition. This cannot be attained by modern drugs which constitute a single drug which are used to address a single health defect. Despite the huge potential herbs are believed to deliver, most of the benefits claimed to be attainable through herb consumption are still subject to verification or remain scientifically untested. Thus, many herbal medicines are treated with skepticism by the scientific community. It is without doubt that there is a wealth of health benefits that herbs can give. Yet, herbalism is a wide and at times complex field with many companies making health claims on their products that may not be clinically proven. We need more professional approaches and reliable studies on such claims. The mysterious properties of herbs need to be explored and tested. As of current situation, herbal medicine still needs to be thoroughly researched and studied for their effectiveness. Although at times they offer better health remedies, they cannot replace modern drugs totally. Learn more herbal functional series supplement at http://ww.easypha- 4. 10. 10. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Biotechnology gives hope to finding cure for diseases through genetic engineering and genomics. The completion of the human genome map has paved way for a better insight into our DNA for a better understanding of human diseases. Recently, four main promising areas of medical biotechnology are expanding: gene therapy, vaccines, pharmacogenetics and bio-diagnostics. • GENE THERAPY - THE WAY OF THE GENE Gene therapy could one day be the answer to many human diseases, especially genetic diseases. Human gene therapy refers to the introduction of a healthy gene into an individual suffering from disease caused by a defective gene. In other words, the technique seeks to modify a person’s faulty gene. This technique is especially useful when treating genetic disorders or diseases that are normally caused by a defective gene such as haemophilia, phenylketonuria and cystic fibrosis. In contrast, it can be used in treating diseases caused by more than one defective gene. An example is sickle cell anaemia disease arises when the person has two copies of sickle cell genes. Thanks to the completion of the human genome, scientists can now understand the mechanism of a faulty gene that causes a disease. Severe combined immunodeficiency is one of the many diseases treated via gene therapy. A recent advancement in gene therapy in 2006 saw a group of US researchers from National Cancer Institute using gene therapy to treat patients with skin cancer. They introduced T-cell receptor-expressing gene into the patients’ white blood cell and re- introduced the genetically engineered white blood cells (T cell is a type of immunity cell). The white blood cells could then produce lots of T-cell receptors that are specific in detecting cancerous cells in the patients and destroy those cancerous cells. • BIOTECH VACCINES - GENETICALLY-ENGINEERED VACCINES TO THE RESCUE How can biotechnology help in vaccine development? The answer is to use biotechnology tool to produce ‘biotech vaccines’ without using the entire whole virus, weakened or killed virus (as what conventional vaccines are usually made of). Conventional vaccines, when introduced into the body may accidentally introduce the Page 10 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited
  11. 11. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ disease-causing particles that may have not been weakened (or the particles may possibly be re-activated in the body). Through biotechnology, scientists can produce only the antigens (the viral particles that trigger the immune system - antibody production) without having to use the whole virus. This is done in a laboratory by using yeast as the ‘factory’ to ‘churn out' the antigens desired. The recombinant yeast cultures - now containing inserted viral gene that produces the desired antigens - are cultured in vitro. Thus, a safer way of using vaccines (in this case just the antigens) could be accomplished. Therefore, it eliminates the risk of transmitting the virus into a patient receiving vaccination. Fancy the notion of getting a shot of DNA to treat hepatitis B? DNA vaccine development is now underway to offer another solution for producing vaccines without the need to use whole or viral particles (killed or weakened). What is more interesting is that DNA vaccine has the potential to treat diseases that have no vaccines at the moment. It uses engineered DNA of the infectious virus. It acts as vaccine to stimulate the immune system when injected into a patient’s body. DNA vaccines are currently under human clinical trials. Another ‘new kid on the block’ is edible vaccines. Imagine the idea of eating an apple that contains vaccine against influenza. Researches have been undergoing to produce vaccine-containing commercial crops like wheat and corn, as well as fruits and vegetables. This will revolutionize the way vaccines are made available. Reason being is that people who cannot afford expensive vaccines can now get vaccines from their food. It is a wonder when mums will start saying “Eat your vaccines” instead of “Eat your greens” . • PHARMACOGENETICS - YOUR TAILOR-MADE MEDICINES AT YOUR SERVICE Medicines developed through modern biotechnology use proteins that help the body to fight off infections. The hope to engineer safer and more powerful medicines is possible now, by combining different strands of genetic material through laboratory manipulation. These genetically engineered medicines are now available in Europe and the United States for treating infections, diabetes, anaemia, hepatitis, haemophilia, heart disease, immune system deficiencies and various cancers. Scenario: Two different patients have the same heart condition. They both are taking heart medication drugs. Yet, the drugs differ between them. Why? Answer: The drugs they are taking are made specifically for each of them in terms of Page 11 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited
  12. 12. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ dosage and toxicity. Those individual-specific drugs are possible through pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics. Major medical biotechnology developments that are currently taking place are pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics. Pharmacogenetics looks into the single gene’s different responses to a particular drug whereas pharmacogenomics refers to more than one gene’s responses to the drug. It is estimated that 20-40% of different individual responded differently to a drug is attributed to genetic factors. As such, by studying the response, a good measure of toxicity risks, drug dosage and drug response can be established. The information allows more effective design of therapies and more accurate results in clinical trials. Greater knowledge of how genes respond to different medications can help researchers create better target drug. Hence, there will be a drug especially ‘tailor-made’ for each person based on their gene. • BIO-DIAGNOSTICS - THE BEST OF TESTS Bio-diagnostics are used to detect a wide range of diseases and genetic disorders. This biotechnology-based diagnosis tests simplify the overall diagnosis procedures. For example, the screening of blood samples could allow the detection of HIV and hepatitis in minutes rather than hours or days. There are now many bio-diagnostic kits out in the market right now ranging from pregnancy test kit, infectious disease detection kit and cancer detection kit. HIV drug resistance tests designed to evaluate viral resistance to specific antiviral drugs are considered to be one of the major benefits of modern biotechnology in developed countries. The genetics and biotechnology age has really caught up. The rapid advancement of genetic research enables scientists to decipher the genes role in various diseases and eventually has given birth to genetic-based diagnosis. Now, more accurate nucleic acid probe assay can be designed with all the information gained from the complete human genome map. Genetic-based tests are able to detect any underlying genetic diseases, predict ones susceptibility to a disease (due to family hereditary factors) and find out whether one is a carrier of a certain disease. 5. 13. 13. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Of Boosting Herbal Extract Production and Saving Them at the Same Time It is said to be the new wave and the new revolution in this millennium after the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) era. The Human Genome Project has been completed in 2004, giving researchers valuable access that provide insights to the human DNA machinery works like never before. The first plant to have its entire genome mapped out was Arabidopsis thaliana. This will benefit the studies regarding plant specific genes. Improved crop varieties (using marker-assisted breeding) or genetically modified (GM; whereby foreign gene or genes is/are inserted) crops and live stocks have benefited farmers, food production and the economy. All these achievements are attributed to biotechnology. So now, how all these revolutionary advances in field of biotechology could benefit the herbal industry? Read on. Herbs, or medicinal plants possess bioactive compounds that are responsible for their medicinal properties. These compounds, also termed collectively as secondary metabolites, produced through the plant's biochemical pathways. Naturally, plants continues to produce these phytochemicals in their life time. It is the goal for herbal medicine manufacturers to see a more efficient and increased production of herbal extracts from the plant sources. Yet, existing plants can only produce the active ingredients in a certain amount. In order to produce a much desired amounts of these phytochemicals for pharmaceutical purposes, we need a tool to help us achieve those goals. This can be achieved by indentifying the enzyme involved in a certain biosynthesis pathway, which in turn is responsible for the secondary metabolite production. Enzyme productions, in turn are controlled by the DNA, or in other words, through gene expressions. Through recombinant DNA technology, foreign genes that can enhance production of secondary metabolites could be inserted in the plant's genome of interest. Many such studies have been carried on medicinal plants such as Digitalis lanata. The production of flavanoids and anthraquinones (a group of phytochemicals) of the genetically transformed (insertion of foreign gene usually of higher gene expression) roots of the plant recorded a much higher yield compared to those specimes that were not. Thus, recombinant DNA technology promises much better results in terms of higher yields of the medicinally important phytochemicals. Imagine that if we just need to use certain plant parts instead of the entire plant and yet produce comparable or more amounts of the phytochemicals (secondary metabolites to be exact; the chemical compounds that imparts plant medicinal values and in which are the constituents of commercial herbal extracts). With that, we can overcome the problem Page 13 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited
  14. 14. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ of limited plant samples and prevent over-harvesting of endangered plant species at the same time. How can this be done? Well, this is achieved by incorporating both plant cell/tissue culture techniques and bioreactor system. Tissues of certain parts of a plant could be isolated so that mass amounts of plant cells could be grown (multiplied in number) by feeding them nutrients and cultivate them in a controlled environment. The bioreactor system is like a factory for growing and multiplying plant cells in liquid suspension. Through it, we induce the production of secondary metabolites. For example, a study by Hahn et. al. (2003) concluded that Panax ginseng suspension culture, when grown in a large scale bioreactor, was able to produce large amounts of ginsedoside, a compound of medicinal value from the roots. Thus, large scale bioreactor system can be applied for the commercial scale production of important secondary metabolites. An estimated figure of 50,000 to 60,000 plant species are now being used in both traditional medicine practice as well as modern medicine system. According to the 2006 IUCN Red List, a total of 8390 of plants are classified endangered. This goes to show that plant conservation is vital to ensure valuable medicinal plants will not cease to exist. Cryopreservation is a potential tool for conserving plant species, especially those which are rare and facing extinction threats. Using liquid nitrogen (which can brittle and break off your fingers if you come into contact with it directly), whole plant is freezed under extreme cold temperature (-196oC). The plant's metabolism will then be arrested. In other words, its biosynthesis is stopped. This allows long term storage of plant cultures, its seeds and other parts of important value. As a result, it will then serve for future plant conservation purposes. Indeed, biotechnology applications offer many advantages for the advancement of medicinal plant research. Besides benefiting the herbal industry commercially, biotechnology can help in the genetic conservation of these valuable plants and help fight extinction. References: Srivastava, P. Herbal solution to your body 6.1 Herbs for Men Diseases like incontinence, prostate cancer and obviously not to be excluded; erectile dysfunction (impotence) are some of diseases that men are concerned about. Now, male health issues are not only regarding male reproductive health, but also diseases that are more prevalent amongst men such as heart attack, gout, colon cancer and diabetes. Thus, there is nothing more important than to repeat this old-age advice; Eat healthily and exercise. On the other hand, allow this introduction of another form of advice; 'Know your herbs'. Now, what are the herbs that will benefit the masculine out there? Lear more men health at Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) One herb that has been getting all the attention from men is saw palmetto (S. repens). Men consider saw palmetto as a 'berry' good herb as it berries possess the main active chemical for boosting the sexual reproductive system. Many research studies on saw palmetto have been carried out and are still being conducted to study its potential as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or simply called benign prostate enlargement. Its extract can help decrease prostate enlargement (Challem, 2003). If left untreated, BHP will result in prostate cancer, which is a real nightmare for men since it could lead to more complications, especially impotence and urinary incontinence. Only a note to remember, saw palmetto does not prevent you from getting prostate cancer. Page 15 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited

'True' ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (P. quinquefolius) are two species of ginseng that are mainly used for general health tonic. Asian ginseng, popularly known among the Chinese as Ren Shen, is a 'warm' herb and adaptogenic, whereby it can boost energy and able to aid the body to combat stress. It is taken as an aphrodisiac as well as is said to help those with infertility problems but are yet to be fully proven in human models. Widely found in Southeast Asia in indigenous countries like Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, its roots is used an aphrodisiac and helps to boost male sexual drive, notably in Malay folk remedies (Green, 2007). Many animal studies, more intensively done in Malaysia, have been done to study its aphrodisiac claims. For example is the study on male rats done in 2003 which indicated that E. longifolia's extract has aphrodisiac effects (Ang et. al. 2003). As for now, no proven doses for consumption have been made thus far. Research has revealed that ginkgo extract can potentially improve libido and maintaining erection. Ginkgo extracts has the ability to increase blood vessel dilations and thus, increases blood flow to the male sexual organ. Diabetes is forth main cause of disease-related deaths worldwide. Although this is one of the shocking statistics, even more upsetting is most of the people unaware of their diabetic condition at early stage and they do not fully comprehend diabetes. What actually diabetes is? Diabetes is a disease in which our body unable to produce enough insulin or use insulin to process glucose. If an individual says that he or she have been diagnosed with diabetes, it means the cells unable to absorb glucose which used as source of energy. We can understand about diabetes much better if we understand how the body regulates the glucose. In non-diabetic people Our digestive system breakdowns food into simpler compounds and most carbohydrate foods will end up as glucose. Glucose is source of energy for our body cells. Some amount of glucose will be stored in the liver, while most of it will enter the blood stream. From the blood stream, glucose will enter cells if that the cells have been attached with hormone called insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. Insulin is as a key that creates an opening in the cell membrane to allow the glucose to enter the cells. Learn more diabetes at Type 2 diabetes In type-2 diabetes, cells unable to respond properly to insulin (insulin resistance) resulting decreases in amount of insulin that attach the cells. If less insulin attaches the cells, for sure amount of glucose that enter cells will be decrease. This causes high blood sugar in the blood stream;s hyperglycemia. Type 1 diabetes In type-1 diabetes, pancreas unable makes insulin at all because the body’ Glucose can’t enter the cells without insulin. So level of glucose in blood stream will be very high and causes harmful effect. It also comes from our daily consumption of food such as egg and meat. Food contributes 25% of the total cholesterol level whereas our body produces the rest. This so called waxy substance is important to maintain healthy membrane structure in our bodies. Hormone production such as testosterone and estrogen also require that substance. Yet, it has a dark side too. It is one of the potential causes of coronary heart disease and hypertension (Note: There are other factors that cause these diseases as well). Oh yes, we call it the big C. No, it is not cancer. Rather, the substance being referred to is cholesterol. Cholesterol consists of types -- High-density lipoprotein (HDL or good cholesterol) and Low-density lipoprotein (LDL or bad cholesterol). Cholesterol is found in animals as well as humans (yes, we naturally produce cholesterol too, if you didn’t know yet). And for your information, the cholesterol equivalent found in plants is phytosterol (structurally similar to cholesterol). Usually the intake of high-cholesterol food such as red meat, high saturated fat and trans-fatty foods are the main cause of elevated bad cholesterol (LDL) level in the blood stream. Usually, a balanced diet with the intake of high soluble fibre food such as oat can reduce cholesterol levels. Oh, don’t forget that exercise and not smoking also gives you the chance to lower your bad cholesterol levels. Nevertheless, there are quite a number of herbs to help lower cholesterol. Let's take a look at them: Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) This plant has been employed by the Indians in Ayurveda to treat cardiovascular diseases. Its tree bark extracts have hypocholesterolaemic properties that can help to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL), as well as increase good cholesterol level (HDL). Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) Cordyceps is a parasite to a type of moth but a beneficial ‘ingredient’ to humans. Named ‘Dong chong xia cao’ in Chinese, this fungus can be really creepy, in which its spores enter the host body (Hepialis armoricanus bat moth larvae), populate and then kill the moth by consuming all the body content. It then ‘happily’ grows into maturity from the then dead host. Called Chinese caterpillar fungus, C. sinensis is part of the medicinal herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a tonic for the kidneys and lungs. It lowers cholesterol and has anti-tumour activity. Learn more the secret of Cordyceps at http://ww.easypha- Ling zhi (Ganoderma lucidum) Who would have thought that an organism that thrives on wood (live or dead wood) can be useful? Also called lacquered bracket mushroom, Ling zhi or ‘Reishi’ in Chinese, this mushroom have been used medicinally by the Chinese for over two millennia. It is cultivated widely in Malaysia, North America, China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. This mushroom is said to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Besides, G. lucidum helps in boosting energy and immunity levels. With that, some people who are recovering from surgeries consume the mushroom extract to regain their energy. Garlic (Allium sativum) As good as scaring away vampires, it also can potentially ‘scare your partner away’ due to your garlic-smelling breath after a garlic-filled meal. Its extracts possess hypocholesterolemic properties that lower cholesterol levels. Garlic has been shown to reduce lipid and LDL by respectively preventing lipid synthesis as well as lipid peroxidation of LDL (increase lipid peroxidation of LDL can lead to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease). In other words, garlic helps in reducing blood serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels, thus reducing arterial blockage (atherosclerosis) that can potentially cause heart attack. This humble garlic has been used in making health supplements for cholesterol lowering purposes and in fact is one of the top ten best selling herbal supplements around. Its other properties include hypoglycaemic, anti-tumour and anti-bacterial. Guggul (Commiphora mukul) Guggul is the gum-resin that is derived from the bark of C. mukul tree. This tree thrives in the Middle East and Indian Sub-continent region and regions from Myanmar to Java Island (Indonesia) and Malaysia. Guggul (or in particular called guggulipid) can help to lower bad cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides and lipid levels. This gum-resin is also used by Indians as an Ayurveda medicine for osteoarthritis and obesity. Learn more cholesterol at References: 1. Balch, P. A. (2002). Prescriptions for Herbal Healing. Answer: Toxin is defined as any substances that cause irritating or harmful effects to our body. This will undermine our health or put stress on our biochemical or organ functions. Accumulations of toxins will result in a number of ill-effects, such as constipation, stomach bloating, poor digestion, gas, fatigue, weight gain, excessive mucus, poor concentration, headaches, bad skin conditions, poor memory, depression, body odour, bad breath, etc. Our body has few systems to detoxify harmful toxins - digestive system, respiratory system, and lymphatic system. One of the most important cleansing organs is the liver. Other organs that eliminate toxins include kidneys, skin, and lungs. All these organs help to excrete harmful substances from our body. For example, our lungs excrete carbon dioxide when we breathe out, our kidneys filter out chemicals and produce urine, and our skin sheds excess salt through sweat. However, our body could only handle “natural” toxins, not man-made ones, such as heavy metals (lead and mercury) and environmental pollutants. If our body is constantly exposed to unfamiliar toxins and it is not eliminating the toxins effectively, toxins will accumulate and cause health problems. You can try the following to help your body to detoxify harmful substances:- Learn more detoxification at 1. Water: It flushes toxins and waste from our body. It transports nutrients to where they are needed. It is recommended to drink 8-12 eight-ounce glasses of water a day. 2. Healthy diet: A balance diet is needed to help the cleansing process. Avoid excessive Page 33 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited

Exercise: It strengthens the body, promotes better blood circulation and stimulates digestive system. 4. Stress: It weakens your immune system and hinders effective digestion and cleansing processes. You might need to practice stress management techniques in order to stimulate your immune system. The followings are some herbs for detoxification:- Aloe vera: It is an immune stimulant, laxative, and anti-inflammatory agent. It promotes the absorption of nutrients through the digestive tract and normalizes blood sugar levels. However, aloe juice should not be taken internally during pregnancy because laxative compounds in aloe can be transferred into mother’s breast milk. Long term internal use (more than two weeks) of aloe is not recommended because it could lead to depletion of potassium and cause serious mineral imbalances. Milk thistle: Silymarin is a compound extracted from milk thistle. It stimulates the liver to produce bile and dissolves substances that act on fat, drugs, alcohol, and other toxins. Milk thistle tinctures are made with alcohol. Thus, it is not recommended for those who are suffering from liver disease. Dandelion: Dandelion root has a significant cleansing effect on the liver by stimulating the production of bile. It helps to increase the transport of a variety of potentially noxious compounds to the stool. If you are having gallstones, you might need to avoid taking this because increasing the flow of bile could increase pressure against the stones. Turmeric: This herb helps stimulate bile production. It supports the liver’s detoxification process. It also prevents the conversion of alcohol into harmful forms within the liver. Turmeric can be consumed as tea, or added in (in powder form) to dishes as seasoning. Ginger: It has traditionally been used to promote body detoxification through perspiration. It helps to remove excess wastes from our body through sweating. Learn more detoxification at Page 34 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited

Shield Yourself From Cancer “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food” -Hippocrates, Father of Modern Medicine- Our ancestors have been using food and herbs as the primary source in treating diseases. Ancient Egyptians used cabbage to treat around 87 types of illnesses while onions were used in the treatment of 28 health complaints. Medical establishments actually acknowledge that food and herbs are effective in treating a number of diseases. New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association have agreed that certain foods have the ability to protect us from risky diseases like cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes and heart diseases. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reported that a part of the Americans had developed cancer because of poor diet. It shows that diet could really be able to help us fight dangerous diseases. Examples of food that help increase resistance to cancer include barberry, broccoli, red clover, garlic, green tea, mushrooms, cat’s claw and tofu. Barberry This herb has the ability to stimulate the body’s natural defence system and thus acts as an anticancer herb. Broccoli Broccoli is easy to find and is rich in beta carotene, selenium and fibre which helps to prevent cancer. It also contains indoles and sulforaphanes that are potential weapons to fight cancer. Cat’s claw Studies carried out up till today have validated the usage of this herb for inflammations, infections and for some cancers. Garlic Garlic is well known for its ability to heal various health problems. Hippocrates used garlic to treat cancer. It has also been used against plague and to help people with heart problems. 37. 37. Bio Herbal Remedy Guide ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ What does it mean by acidic body? Our eating habits and lifestyle are wreaking havoc to our body and health. You like McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, soda, chips, doughnuts and fried stuffs? Think twice before excessively gorging these stuffs down your throat. When we consume foods like fast food, snacks, refined carbohydrates, soda and alcohol, they are digested by our body. The digestion produces acidic compounds, hence acidifying our body. Stress factors, lacking of exercise, exposure to pollutants, toxic overload (from drugs, ingestion of pesticide residue from food) only make things worse. Over acidic body ‘attracts’ many kinds of sickness. You can feel constant tiredness (fatigue), you may see your body adding more those unwanted extra pounds (obesity) or your complexion gets duller and more pimples start breaking out (your body not expelling toxins effectively). In other words, what happens if your body gets to acidic? 1. It provides a condition that allows tumour cells to thrive - CANCER 2. Make the body more susceptible to fatigue and illness 3. Your body will have a hard time getting rid of heavy metals and toxins, causing more stress to organs that expels toxins (e.g. : Kidney, lungs, liver, skin, colon) 4. Acid build-up in cells can hamper the body’s ability to repair damaged cells Balancing the body’s pH (to measure acidity and alkalinity) is the first step towards well- being and greater health. To maintain health, eat more fresh fruits and particularly vegetables (see the list below to find out what are the alkaline forming fruits, veggies and other foods) to balance out the protein intake (acid forming food). Among many fruits, lemon is categorized as one of the extremely alkaline-producing food. What!!? Now, wait a minute. Lemon is alkaline? It is always in the general perception that lemon is acidic, but the fact is it is not. Here is why - A food’s acid/alkaline forming abilities have nothing related to the actual pH of the food itself. By right, citrus fruits are acidic when their pH levels are tested. However, when eaten (following digestion and assimilation by the body), they become alkaline. Chlorophyll - Natural Green Blood With Wonderful Health Benefits Barley green (or wheatgrass), alfalfa and spirulina have been advertised as “superfoods” because of their superior chlorophyll content. What is chlorophyll? What is so “super” with chlorophyll? What are all the health-raves circling this “super” supplement? Chlorophyll is a natural plant pigment that aids a plant’s most vital biochemical process - photosynthesis. And of course all plants have chlorophyll, not just barley green (wheatgrass), alfalfa and spirulina. Learn more wheatgrass series at http://ww.easypha- Learn more spirulina at Chlorophyll is also tagged as “plant’s green blood” . This is because chlorophyll bears a striking resemblance (molecular structurally speaking) to haem (American English: Heme) molecules, in which haems will form haemoglobins - the red pigment in human’s red blood cells. Both chlorophyll and haem are oxygen-carrying molecules. The only difference is that haem contains iron complexes while chlorophyll contains magnesium complexes. Chlorophyllin - a sodium copper salt (also called chlorophyllin copper complex sodium) derivative of chlorophyll - is the most common form of over-the-counter chlorophyll supplement. Chlorophyllin is water soluble, while chlorophyll is fat soluble. Chlorophyll (or chlorophyllin) can be taken in various forms; either liquid or solid but definitely not in vapour form (but keep an open mind - who knows, future scientists might invent such thing for those who dislike the so-called unpalatable ‘green taste’ of chlorophyll). Health benefits of the "green blood" The benefits of chlorophyll is widely advertised and believed by general public that chlorophyll has lots of benefit to human health. And not mentioning that there are some who claimed that “what works in nature, surely works in man” . We try not to prove this theory wrong. Rather, let us focus on what chlorophyll can benefit us with the available evidence thus far. • Cancer preventer and detoxifying agent Chlorophyll has the ability to bind with carcinogenic compound, heterocyclic amines, dioxins, aflatoxin (deadly toxin secreted by moulds in foods, in which will cause liver cancer) and other hydrophobic compounds which are able to cause cancer. Chlorophyllin has been studied extensively for its anticarcinogenic properties. And the Page 39 Copyright Bio-Herbal Remedy Guide@ 2010 All Right Reserved Reproduction Prohibited

Additionally, several studies have shown that chlorophyllin has chemo- preventive properties [1] [3] [5] [6], in which it helps to prevent damaging effects of carcinogens by binding with carcinogens in the gut (its mechanisms include coupling with electrophile scavenging or further complexion in the target organ) [5]. Another study on rats, published in Environmental Health Perspectives journal in March 2001 [4], indicated chlorophyll derived from Chlorella has the ability to significantly prevent absorption and re-absorptions of dioxins (especially from food source) in the digestive tract. However, not intending to spoil the moment, no concrete studies have been done to date to rule out the possibility of chlorophyll limiting the absorption of beneficial mineral, vitamins and other nutrients (Linus Pauling Institute, Oregon State University). Studies have revealed that chlorophyll’s close resemblance to haemoglobin of human red blood cells is partly responsible for its ability to stimulate red blood cells. When iron content in the body is sufficient, consumption of chlorophyll will produce haemoglobin molecules - by the replacement of magnesium from the chlorophyll’s core. There have also been testimonials from patients about liquid chlorophyll’s effectiveness to raise red blood cell count after surgery. • Regenerative agent Chlorophyll promotes wound healing when applied externally by hastening or promotes growth new cell growth within the wound area. This is due to chlorophyll’s anti- inflammatory and anti-agglutinin properties [7]. Agglutination or the phenomenon of red blood cells clustering or clumping together in the blood capillaries (promoted by tissue breakdown components) will hamper efficient wound healing process. Besides, certain traditional medicinal practices also include chlorophyll as a natural mouth gargle to combat bad breath However, According to John C. Kephart, a researcher who has about 20 years of experience at The National Chlorophyll and Chemical Company, he said that “To be effective, large doses of chlorophyll must be given internally" [Journal of Ecological Botany 9:3, 1955]. Hence, how much of pure chlorophyll can the marketed chlorophylls provide when they have gone through numerous processes before reaching the consumer? In conclusion, in all the benefits and controversies surrounding chlorophyll’s health benefit, we ought to be wise in determining the truth. And also, whether we choose to believe the claims or otherwise, moderate amount in our daily diet will always make some difference. Oh, bear in mind that no tests on pregnant women and lactating women, thus chlorophyll and chlorophyllin supplements should not be taken by this group of people.
