Defenition of Nouns
• Noun is a word used as the names of
a person, place, or thing.
Example : Heru, book, cat, school
SINGULAR AND PLURAL NOUNSINGULAR AND PLURAL NOUN
• Singular noun is a noun that denotes one
person, place, or one thing.
e.g. boy, girl, butterfly, flower, dictionary, pencil
• Plural noun is a noun that denotes more than
one person, place or more than one thing.
e.g. boys, girls, butterflies, flowers, dictionaries,
CHANGING THE SINGULAR INTO PLURALCHANGING THE SINGULAR INTO PLURAL
1. The plural nouns is generally formed by adding
-s to the singular
e.g. boy → boys
pen → pens
girl → girls
pencil → pencils
2. If the noun ending in -s, -sh, -ch, or -x, the
plural form by adding -es to the singular
e.g. dish → dishes
watch → watches
class → classes
box → boxes
3. If the noun ending in -y, preceded by a
consonant, form their plural by changing -y into
-i and adding -es
e.g. army → armies
lady → ladies
copy → copies
butterfly → butterflies
4. Several nouns ending in -f or -fe, form their
plural by changing -f, or -fe into -v and adding
e.g. knife → knives
leaf → leaves
life → lives
thief → thieves
5. Most nouns ending in -o also form the plural by
adding -es to the singular
e.g. buffalo → buffaloes
mango → mangoes
hero → heroes
potato → potatoes
6. A few nouns ending in -o, generally those
which are in less common use and
abbreviations, merely add -s.
e.g. bamboo → bamboos
hindoo → hindoos
Solo → Solos
photo → photos
7. A few nouns form their plural by changing the
inside vowel of the singular.
e.g. man → men
woman → women
foot → feet
mouse → mice
8. There are a few nouns that form their plural by
adding –en to the singular.
e.g. ox → oxen
child → children
COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLECOUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE
Countable noun is a noun which come
from singular. They can also be made
plural by the addition of -s.
e.g. one girl
Uncountable noun is not used in the
plural. Mass noun form one type of
uncountable noun. They aaer words
for concrete objects stated in an

Abstarct noun is word for concept. It is an idea
that exist in our minds only such as the name of
quality, action, or state considered apart form
the object to which it belongs.
e.g. QUALITY : kindness, bravery, wisdom
ACTION : justice, movement, hatred
STATE : youth, death, boyhood
Concrete noun is a word for a physical
object that can be perceived by the
sense such as seeing, touching , and
smelling the object.
e.g. SEEING : scenery, cloud
TOUCHING : fire, ice
SMELLING : flower, perfume
