  1. 1. SEARCHING THE ERIC DATABASE Lamson Library & Learning Commons Plymouth State University

What is ERIC? <ul><li>Education Resources Information Center </li></ul><ul><li>The most specialized and comprehensive database of research on all aspects of education at all levels. </li></ul><ul><li>Indexes & abstracts over 600 specialized education journals, both professional and peer-reviewed. </li></ul><ul><li>Indexes & abstracts several hundred thousand ERIC Documents and Digests. </li></ul><ul><li>Many Full Text sources directly linked. </li></ul>
  3. 3. First Steps <ul><li>Start at the Lamson Library website </li></ul><ul><li>Click on Databases link at left. </li></ul><ul><li>Select ERIC from list of databases </li></ul><ul><li>Sample research topic: “I need to find articles on some aspect of reading in grades 1-3.” </li></ul>
  4. 4. Use the THESAURUS to identify the correct ERIC DESCRIPTORS (Subject Headings) related to reading
  5. 5. Use the THESAURUS again to find the descriptor “primary education” to represent Grades 1-3. Add this term as a second descriptor
  6. 6. To limit the search to research articles within a certain date, simply enter the year in the “Date Published” year box. Limit results to “Journal Articles” here. Scroll down through the “Publication Type” window & select Reports - Research
  7. 7. #13 is available in PDF full text format Lamson Library subscribes to this journal means the journal can found in the library, or even through another online source
  8. 8. Many ERIC Documents are available full-text. Older documents are available in microfiche format
  9. 9. Click here to save an item to folder

Document Delivery (ILL) <ul><li>Free service available to all students. </li></ul><ul><li>For Graduate students, the service includes material that is owned by Lamson Library. </li></ul><ul><li>Articles will be mailed directly to the address provided in your request. </li></ul><ul><li>Plan ahead! It may take up to two weeks for delivery of material not owned by Lamson. </li></ul>
