Last friday the Spartans and Rams went into
battle in a classic rivalry game. The Rams
looked to get the rivalry trophy back as the
Spartans looked to defend it for the 5th year
in a row. The game was close for the first
quarter but after that the Spartans offense
ws producing points and the defense was
making stops. The only Rams touchdown
was in towards the end of the second
quarter. The Spartans held off the Rams for
the 5th straight year with a 7-28 Victory. The
Spartans face another rival this coming
week against the Bell Eagles.

Section power crushed South East, 41-
0 and held star Jaguars running back
Robert Lewis to four yards on the
ground. The Jaguars (1-1) had a
minus-seven yards as a team.Gilberto
Rivera was 13-of-35 for 124 yards
through the air for South East.Lewis
had nine tackles and an interception on
defense.Noel Rankin had three scoring
runs for the Gauchos (1-0).

two teams still in search of their first Eastern
League football victories, square off at 7 p.m.
Friday at Huntington Park.The Jaguars, coming
off a bye week, are 3-2 overall and 0-1 in
league. They fell to Roosevelt, 31-27 Oct.
1.Huntington Park finds itself 1-5 and 0-2
following narrow league losses to Jordan (13-
10) and Roosevelt (14-10).Junior Robert Lewis
leads South East with his all-around play. He is
the top rusher with 484 yards and six
touchdowns on 55 carries, has 12 receptions for
166 yards and has returned five kickoffs for 168
yards. He has 10 TDs total.Quarterback
Gilberto Rivera has completed 50 percent of his
passes for 700 yards and five TDs.

Garfield picked up an important
Eastern League victory on Friday
night, defeating L.A. Jordan, 23-15.
Levi Peralta came up with a key
interception for the Bulldogs, who
are 2-0 in league after losing their
first four nonleague games to
Southern Section schools.

Kevin Valle’s 25-yard run in overtime lifted
South Gate (1-1) to a 28-21 victory over
Belmont Thursday. Ernesto Torres scored
the first two South Gate TDs on a seven-
yard run and 22-yard pass from Emanuel
Leyva. Jesse Ruiz also scored on a three-
yard run.Belmont was led by Shaquil Maheia
(15-of-31, 171 yards), who had a seven-yard
scoring pass to Mark Landigen and a nine-
yarder to Shakur Maheia. Edgar Aguilar (18
carries, 95 yards) scored on a five-yard run
for the Sentinels.South Gate is at Monroe
Sept. 17.

For Huntington Park (1-4), Roberto Andrade
was the standout against Jordan with 29
carries for 165 yards and two catches for 31
yards. Andrade has rushed for 572 yards
and four TDs on 102 carries this
season.Mauricio Maldonado, who kicked a
37-yard field goal and was involved in seven
tackles, and Diego Melgoza, who had an
interception, both played well for Huntington
Park last week.Roosevelt (4-1) slipped past
South East, 31-27 in its league opener.South
East (3-2), which has a bye this week, got
solid efforts from quarterback Gilberto
Rivera (12-of-20 for 218 yards, TD) and
running back Robert Lewis (18 carries for
144 yards). Samuel Encarnacion caught
three passes for 93 yards.

Hernandez said. “We struggled
offensively, they struggled
offensively. There weren’t many

Fernandez was erased by holding.
Fullback Danny Vargas took a
middle screen 40 yards to the five
at the end of the half, but time
expired before the Bulldogs could

to lift Jordan High School to a 36-12 win
over Washington Prep Friday in a
nonleague football game.Lewis, who was
14-of-31 with three interceptions,
connected with Robert McCovery (four
catches for 118 yards) for three of his
scoring passes. The other TD tosses
went to Abdul Castaneda (three for 61),
Jackyle Cooper (four for 39) and Andre
Davis (one for 25).Jordan (2-2) is at
Huntington Park next Friday in an
Eastern League opener. Washington Prep
fell to 0-3.
