  10. 10. Create your own podcast
  11. 11. Steps to podcasting ● Pick goals/hosts/speakers/style/theme/topic/title/cover art ● Create show description/keywords/cover ● Structure your episode (intro/main content/call to action/contact/outro) ● Get a microphone ● Record 3 to 10 episodes to launch ● Edit episodes (use editing tools vs. editing service) ● Storage for your audio feed (Libsyn, Audioboom) ● Test feed for equipment/connections/distribution ● Schedule your podcast release with a regular cadence
  12. 12. Scheduling interviews ● Reach out to your network and on social media (LinkedIn, Facebook) ● Expect to reach out to 100 people, and get 2 to 20 people saying yes. ● Be open about who you are and what your intents are for the interview ● Explain the purpose of the interview ● Set a length of time for the interview and timeframe of when it could occur ● Message them a few times to see if they are interested. Once a week. ● Send the interview questions in advance to ponder and qualify them ● Use a scheduling tool to save time in booking the interview ● Follow up
  13. 13. Prepare yourself for recording ● Test your equipment and software each time. Confirm tests for guests too. ● Schedule a few sessions/interviews each day with a small break in between each other. ● Avoid dairy and peanut butter before recording. ● Modulate your breathing. Don’t breath into the mic. Consider a pop filter ● Be aware of any background noise. Avoid ● If you are recording via Google Hangouts, phone, Skype, Zoom.us, be aware of any connection drop off. ● Remember to turn off any wifi connection and all mobile devices near you
  14. 14. Conducting interviews ● Test. Both sides for audio quality. If one party does not have mic, use wired earbuds. Minimize background noise from office, outdoors, dogs, etc. ● Context. Why are you doing this? Why should your audience/guest care? ● Ask. Questions and clarifications for you and/or your audience ● Goal. What is this for? ● Errors. Take a pause if there is an error for editing purposes later. ● Time. Be aware of time constraints for you, your guest and your audience. ● Identify. Who are you speaking with? ● Process. How are you going to interview them? Rapid Q&A? Conversational? ● Follow up. Send them the edited audio for review and approval
  15. 15. Editing Podcasts ● GarageBand (Apple) ● Audacity (PC) ● Pro Tools (Apple/PC) ● Upwork (contract) ● Others?
  16. 16. How long should it be? PODCAST FREQUENCY Daily Weekly Biweekly Monthly Annually? SUGGESTED EPISODE LENGTH 1–15 minutes (sometimes 30) 15–60 minutes (with exceptions) 60 minutes 60–90 minutes This isn’t podcasting! Source: https://theaudacitytopodcast.com/tap017-how-long-and-how-often-should-you-podcast/
  17. 17. Building a podcast audience ● More great content to consume (more episodes, not longer) ● Great quality content you can not find anywhere else ● Consistent cadence with regular release schedule (every Thursday morning) ● Create a new category (blue ocean strategy) ● Build a following (email list, social media followers) ● 1000 true fans ● Measure to see what works over time and what does not (statistics, traffic) ● Don’t stop posting or your audience will leave you
