Since early age Hend Al-Mansour pursued a passion for art. As a child she carved images of women into sand, filled many sketchbooks with her drawings, and was known as an artist by her peers. Yet she was acutely aware of her limitations in terms of freedom and status as a Saudi Arabian woman.

1. Eve
Here is what I am working on these
days. Complex process.
First I sketched the broad lines on
paper. Then I made a detailed drawing
of each element. Next, scanned that
in sections because the drawing is
larger than my scanner. Talk about
putting the sections together: a
nightmare. Finally I cleaned it up with
Photoshop. Here is the result.
I am calling it Eve - but the title might
change to 'First Mother'. This way the
viewer has a wider interpretation
spectrum.

2. Bad Screen Day
Today I ruined three
screens in an attempt to
burn a pattern. I like my
pattern but the screen
does not seem to like it.
Now I have to cover
more screens with
photo emulsion, oh my.
The only bright side of
the evening is that
Jahida Wehbe, a
Lebanese singer I
discovered recently, was
singing: "I will not let
flowers wither in my
garden." Nice thought.

4. The Secret
In a background of checkered
pattern of Saudi men’s
headdress, two women smile
at us under a flowery curtain.
From their hands flows a swirl
of pink henna pattern within
gold background. Celebrating
beauty is their way to defy
oppression.

5. Blueness
This is the front arch of the
model.
Blue from the inside and
covered with ornaments from
the outside.
The life size installation will be
displayed in January in
Concordia Gallery in St. Paul.
