SLIDE 4 The United States According to the U.S. Census, there are more than 284 million people living in the United States. It is roughly estimated that 200 million of them do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. How effective are our 47,000 Southern Baptist churches and missions in reaching them? How effective is our own church? Statistics show that the typical (or median) Southern Baptist church baptizes only five people each year. In 2001, Southern Baptist churches and missions reported 395,930 baptisms. In 2000, there were 6,926 Southern Baptist churches that reported no baptisms. We must embrace the vision of being On Mission Together to reap the harvest God has given us in the United States. One of the tremendous needs of churches in the United States is reaching the many ethnic groups. Based on 2000 Annual Church Profile data, there are 6,897 ethnic and African-American congregations in the Southern Baptist Convention. These congregations have more than 932,000 members.
SLIDE 5 Canada According to Statistics Canada , there are 31 million people living in Canada. A diverse multicultural nation, it is roughly estimated that more than 20 million people in Canada do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The religious climate in Canada is one of tolerance. Evangelical Christians find sharing their faith among people apathetic to anything religious a great challenge. In Canada, 38 percent of people indicate they never or practically never attend religious services. Significantly more Americans say they go to church, pray, and read the Bible than do Canadians. Currently, there are 175 Southern Baptist churches and missions in Canada, and the total membership of those churches is about 10,000 people. The Canadian Convention of Southern Baptists has set a goal of having 1,000 churches in the convention by 2020.
