Two Ears are better than one: Treatment Options for Single-Sided Deafness
1. Two Ears are better than one: Treatment Options for
Single-Sided Deafness
Anyone is susceptible to Single Sided Deafness.
Some individuals are born with it while others
experience a disease or condition such as viral or
bacterial infection in the inner ear, physical
damage to the ear, pressure on the hearing
nerve, circulatory system disorder, severe
Meniere’s disease, and acoustic or brain tumors.
The effects include difficulty attending business
meetings or gatherings where more than one person is talking,
eating at restaurants is challenging due to background noise, and
some individuals experience difficulty crossing the road or
participating in hobbies such as hunting due to the inability to
localize.
In the past treatment, has included Contralateral Routing of the
Signal (CROS) hearing aids. A CROS fitting includes a hearing aid
on the “poor” hearing ear which collects sounds from that side.
The sounds are then transmitted via FM to a hearing aid on the
“good” hearing ear. Although some patients have benefited from
CROS fittings, most patients have not.
More recently, the development of the Bone Anchored Hearing
Aid (BAHA) has resulted in a more satisfactory outcome for
patients. The BAHA is an implantable device based on natural
bone conduction hearing. The BAHA is comprised sound processor
that collects sound from the “poor” ear, routes sound through the
abutment to the implant. The implant oscillates, setting sound to
vibrations which are picked up by the “good” hearing ear.
Trans Ear is a non-surgical treatment option that looks like a
custom In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aid. However, it has a miniature
2. oscillator embedded in the shell of the device. This oscillator
makes contact with the bony portion of the ear canal, transferring
the signal from the “poor” ear to the “good” ear through natural
bone conduction. If you experience SSD, contact your physician
or audiologist for more information and to determine which option
is right for you.
