Summary
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has
released updates to its International Classification of
Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-
CM) system diagnosis codes for fiscal year (FY) 2023. ICD-
10-CM codes, which will increase from 72,750 to 73,639,
impact all provider types in both the inpatient and
outpatient settings. The updates are effective beginning
October 1, 2022. Some of the additions for 2023 include
the following:
1. Certain infectious and parasitic diseases.
2. Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases.
3. Mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
4. Diseases of the nervous system.
5. Diseases of the digestive system.

ICD-10-CM Updates
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the fiscal
year (FY) 2023 updates to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th
Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) system. All provider types in both
the inpatient and outpatient settings use the ICD-10-CM system.
The FY 2023 updates include 1,176 additions, 287 deletions, and 28 revisions.
This brings the total of diagnosis codes to 73,639—an increase from 72,750
for FY 2022. The updates are effective beginning October 1, 2022.

codes and replacing them with the additions above to provide greater
detail in reporting.

For code range C8440-C8449, which describes peripheral T-cell lymphoma, the words
“not classified” have been changed to “not elsewhere classified” in the long description.
This is also the case for code C946, Myelodysplastic disease.
The code description for F0150, vascular dementia without behavioral disturbance, has
been changed to“Vascular dementia, unspecified severity, without behavioral
disturbance, psychotic disturbance, mood disturbance, and anxiety.”CMS has made the
same wording changes for F0280, dementia in other diseases classified elsewhere
without behavioral disturbance, and F0390, unspecified dementia without behavioral
disturbance.
The code description for G3109, other frontotemporal dementia has been changed to
“other frontotemporal neurocognitive disorder.” Also, for code G3183, dementia with
Lewy bodies, the word “dementia” has been changed to “neurocognitive disorder.”

2023 ICD-10-CM Revisions
The code description for G3184, mild cognitive impairment, so stated, has been changed
to “mild cognitive impairment of uncertain or unknown etiology.”
For codes K3532 and K3533 for acute appendicitis with perforation, CMS has added the
words “and gangrene” to the long description.
For code range M93011 through M93033 for slipped upper femoral epiphysis, the long
description now includes the word “stable.”
CMS will publish these codes in the 2023 ICD-10-CM codebook, but they are available for
review now within Vitalware® by Health Catalyst products.
