HOW TO COUNT WORDS AND
CHARACTERS IN WEB BROWSERS
Sometimes, you need to know the number of words in a a piece of text on a web browser,
particularly if you're doing something where the number of words you can use is restricted, such
as in a tweet, an online job application or an essay. Opening a whole other word processing
program and copying and pasting is time consuming and laborious; make things easier for
yourself by counting the words without leaving your web browsers. But with the many different
popular browsers out there, counting words has never been easier. If you want to count the
number of words using web browsers, there are two main methods:
Method 1. Using a word counter tool online
Step 1. Visit a good word count tool website:
There are many websites offer the word count and character count tool such as Character
Count Tool. One word count website recommended by many writers is Word Counter. This site
provides an extensive report about the number of words, characters, sentences... The tool
includes many other features like readability, keyword density, case change, etc.. to maximize
your writing productivity.
Step 2. Type your text in the text box. The statistics automatically appears in the
summary part and the extensive report part. If we select a part of the text, the Selection section
provide the statistics of the selected text.

Word counter online tools often provides much extra information about the inputed text,
for example the number of words, characters, syllables, monosyllabic words, polysyllabic words,
sentences, paragraph, unique words, short words, long words, characters without spaces... This
extra statistics may come in handy in some situations.
Method 2. Using a plugin/ add-on
Each web browsers has its own ecosystem of plugins and add-ons that extend the
browsers’ functionality. We can just do some google search about the functionality with the
name of the browser that we want. For example, if we want to count the number of words in
Chrome, just search for “word count chrome” and having Google display some good results for us.
Below describes some word count extensions, add-ons in two main popular web
browsers: Chrome and Firefox
For Google Chrome Browser
Step 1. Go to the Word Count Tool Chrome Extension. There are many alternatives, all
of them are available for free.

Step 2. Click the Add To Chrome button and accept the permissions request from the
extension to add the extension to your Google Chrome Browser.
Step 3. Select the text and right click to invoke the context menu and select Word Count

Step 4. Look for your word count statistics in your browser window. The word count
statistics will appears as a notification panel and automatically disappear after a while.
For Firefox Browser
Step 1. Install a word count Firefox add-on. Go to the Word Count Tool Firefox Add-On
web. Click the Add To Firefox button to install the add-on.

Step 2. Right clicking to view the context menu (when there is some text selected), and
choose Word Count Tool item or use the keyboard short cut Alt + Shift + C
Step 3. Look for a dialog box to display that will show you your word count statistics. A
dialog contains the word count statistics appears with many information about the selected text.
