Questionnaire of magazine review

  1. 1. Questionnaireof magazinereview.By Harry Beaumont
  2. 2. What I did and why?Same with my other two questionnaires, I had asked the same 20participants on what feel a good, successful magazine reviewcontains and in what way does it persuade you to actually watchthe main product. I had designed this questionnaire in order tofind what types of magazines my target audience read and tofind out if they ever have read a magazine review. The reasonbehind this was so that when it comes to planning and producingmy film review, I will know what content to add and what type offilm reviews to analysis in order to produce a successful filmreview. The 20 participants I had asked were students andteachers within my media class, the reason of this is becausethese are the sort of people I plan to target my product at, so inorder to successfully advertise my product and persuade them towatch my main product, I first need to find out what type ofthings they expect to be contained within a film review and whatpersuades them.
  3. 3. My Questionnaire1) What gender are you? (please circle one) Male Female2) How old are you? (please circle one) Under 12 12-14 15-17 18-20 21- 25 over 253) Do you read magazines? (please circle one) Yes No4) What is your favorite type of magazine? (If needed circle more than one)) Regional national Film Magazine Music Magazine Gossip Magazine otherIf other what type?……………………………………………………………………………………5) What is about this type of magazine that interests you so much?……………………………………………………………………………………6) Do you ever read Film reviews? (please circle one)Yes NoIf yes, what magazine do you read them in?…………………………………………………………………………………………7) What do you expect to be written in a film review?………………………………………………………………………………………8) Has a film review in a magazine ever encouraged you to see a film? (Please circle one.) Yes NoIf yes, can you remember which film? And which magazine the review came from?…………………………………………………………………………………………
  4. 4. My findings- Do you readmagazines? Out of the 20 participants 16 of them18 had said that they read16 magazines. But 4 of them had said they don’t. The14 reason I had asked this12 question is because I10 wanted to get a rough idea of who my film 8 review would be 6 targeting, as well as how many. Also I wanted to 4 know how successful 2 magazine reviews are as an advertisement. 0 Yes No
  5. 5. My findings- What is yourfavourite type of magazine? Regional The reason I had asked the participants what type of magazine they prefer is National because with the last question being quite vague, I wanted to get a clearer Film understanding of how effective film magazines are Magazine so therefore I know how Music successful film reviews are. Magazine Gossip Magazine
  6. 6. My findings- What is it about this type of magazine that interests you so much?Of the participants that had said that film magazine were their favouritetype of magazine, had said that the content within film magazines, likefinding out about upcoming films and reading film reviews to find outwhich film is worth watching, is what interests them and persuades themto keep buying film magazines.5 of the participants who had chosen gossip magazines as theirfavourite, had said that they enjoy reading into celebs personal lives andfinding out their gossip. So this question had allowed me the gather an insight into why peoplebuy certain magazines, but this question was specifically designed tofind out why people buy film magazines, and with the majority of themsaying its because of film reviews has told me that film reviews aresuccessful in persuading the audience as they buy film magazines for thereviews.
  7. 7. My findings- Do you ever read film reviews? If yes, which magazine’s do you read them in?20 Out of the 20 participants 17 of them had said that they have read a film review, even if it was just the once.15 Magazines in which the10 participants read film reviews. 5 0 Empire Yes No TotalThe point to these questions was to find out whopopular film reviews are and how successful they Filmare in persuading their target audience. But also Iwanted to know which film magazines are filmreviews best distributed in . This is in order for me toknow which film magazines to research into, in Out of the 17 participants, 9 had saidorder for me to know what makes a successful film the they read it from Empire and 8 ofreview. them had said Total film.
  8. 8. My findings- What do you expect to be written in a film review? All the participants said that expect to read about theactors, directors and the narrative/synopsis of the product. Filmsreviews are designed to give the audience an insight into whatmakes this film so special and makes it a must see film, and this isdone through celebrity endorsement, if a well known or famousperson stars init. So the participants had said that by talking aboutthe actors within film reviews, is what persuades them to go andwatch the film, along with the critics opinion. So the majority hadalso said the critics opinion is a major aspect throughout, and is amassive persuasion, as most audience members believe thatcritics being professional film fanatics they know what they aretalking about, so majority of the audience takes on the advicegiven by critics and their for they are successful in persuading theaudience.
  9. 9. My findings- Has a film review in a magazine everencouraged you to see a film? If yes, can you rememberwhich film? And which magazine the review came from? The majority of the participants had said that they have beeninfluenced by a film review but the films that they werepersuaded into watching varies in genre and castmembers, from Famous action/ fantasy film ‘Avengers’ toRomantic film ‘The note book’, but the one re-occurring factorwithin every participants questionnaire was that, the film reviewhad came from the two famous film magazines, Empire and TotalFilm. But there was one or two participants, that had written thatit wasn’t a film review within a film magazine that persuadedthem to watch the product, but in fact a review on the website‘Rotten Tomatoes’. This question has allowed me to establishhow film review are in fact a every powerful and persuasive formof advertisment.
  10. 10. EvaluationIf I was to carryout this questionnaire again, I would have mademore open ended question, to get more detailed and opinionativeanswers, but most importantly I would have made these questionscentred around asking the audience about online film reviews, as Ifeel that my questionnaire was quite restricting, in the sense that Iwas specifically talking about magazine reviews. So by restrictingthe audience I feel that the Qualitative data that I had receivedfrom my questionnaire, isn’t as accurate in talking about howsuccessful and persuasive film reviews are, as film reviews are amassive persuasion online as well. So if I was to do theQuestionnaire again I would talk about online reviews and ask theaudience if magazine reviews are similar to those online, and if theyare not, I would like to know why? (what are the similarities anddifferences? And Which one is more persuasive?); in order for me toget accurate results into what makes a good successful film review.
