Brief Overview - MEKAR Exchange

  1. 1. About MEKAR MEKAR Exchange The MEKAR Exchange (www.mekar.biz) is Indonesia’s first Online Peer to Peer micro lending platform developed to meet the needs of Indonesian micro and small entrepreneurs and lenders. Micro and small entrepreneurs in Indonesia face a difficult problem: with average microfinance interest rates of 25% or more, the high cost of financial services for the micro and small entrepreneurs keeps them from growing their earnings enough to improve their families' standards of living. At the same time, financial institutions require individuals to make minimum deposits to participate in basic investment vehicles, like time deposits. This inhibits AVERAGE families in Indonesia from earning decent and secure returns. MEKAR’s Partners - existing Savings & Loan Cooperatives and Micro-Finance Institutions - are carefully selected by MEKAR and are a critical component in MEKAR’s business model. MEKAR’s Partners are assessed on several key factors, including management practices, social mission, borrower loan repayment performance and years of operation. MEKAR’s Partners not only source proposals from trustworthy micro and small entrepreneurs but also secures the loans on behalf of the micro and small entrepreneurs. This, in turn, enables Individual Lenders to lend without worrying about losing their hard earned money. Furthermore, this allows low income working families to participate as Individual Lenders and to take pride in building of their communities, all while earning a decent and secure return. MEKAR also engages the participation of selected Institutional Lenders. These primarily have a social motive but they also expect decent returns. Institutional Lenders tend to fund several proposals at a time and are interested in change at the local community level. The MEKAR Exchange enables Institutional Lenders the to efficiently distribute their money to trustworthy entrepreneurs and to achieve a timely social impact. The MEKAR Exchange brings all of these stakeholders together in a way that achieves the following: • Micro and small entrepreneurs get access to capital at affordable rates. • Individual and Institutional Lenders that have both social and financial objectives, can confidently and securely invest in large or small amounts (as low as 250,000 IDR). • A micro lending ecosystem that is open, secure, trusted and transparent for all stakeholders, enabling them to grow their communities together. • Lenders get a 100% guarantee of the principal on all loans made through MEKAR's partners. • Lenders get a rate of return higher than that of the average banks’ time deposit rate.
