Business Models of The Past: The Eastman Kodak Company Business Case.

Kodak was a great company that dominated its industry for more than 80 years, making billions in revenues and employing more than a hundred and fifty thousand employees worldwide. Armed with the perfect business model and a strong vertical integration, Kodak innovated and offered some of the best products and services in the imaging business.
But to the surprise of the world, Kodak filled for bankruptcy in January 2012!!
This visual case is dedicated to understand why Kodak, despite its potential and strong R&D, failed to compete in the global market.

  29. 29. In 1996, Kodak tried to duplicate the film based Razor-blade business model, with film- based digital Camera…
  30. 30. The Advantix Preview digital camera allowed users to preview their shots and indicate how many prints they wanted…
  31. 31. Yet it still used a film and emphasized print because Kodak was in the photo film, chemical and paper business…
  32. 32. It Flopped and Kodak had to ride off $500M almost the entire cost of development…
  33. 33. Kodak Continued to offer Digital Cameras and managed to acquire 40% of the U.S. market
  34. 34. But…
  35. 35. By mid-2000, digital cameras became really popular…
  36. 36. By 2009, Kodak announced that it would cease selling Kodachrome colour film ending 74 years of production…
  37. 37. However, digital Camera Competition was really fierce, driving the profit margins really low…
  38. 38. By 2010, Kodak’s market share was down to 7% and came in the 7th place after Canon, Sony, Nikon,and others…
  39. 39. Not to mention the rise of the SMARTPHONE Cameras and APPs…

  41. 41. Sales volume went down too, as more (ASIAN) competitors entered the market…

  43. 43. Eventually in Jan., 2012, Kodak Filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection…
  44. 44. In Feb. of 2012, Kodak announced that it will no longer produce digital cameras…

  62. 62. In 1989, Colby Chandler, the CEO, retired. The choices came down to Phil Samper and Kay R. Whitmore…
  63. 63. Whitmore represented the traditional film business, where he had moved up the rank for three decades.
  64. 64. Samper had a DEEP APPRECIATION for digital technology…
  65. 65. The board chose WHITMORE…
  66. 66. Mr. Whitmore said he would MAKE SURE Kodak stayed closer to its core businesses in film and photographic chemicals… The New York Times (12/9/1989)
