Social Media final presentation hampton

 1. 1. Social Media for Educators

by Beth Hampton

July, 2010

 2. 2. Most Useful Tool?

I found Delicious and Twitter to both be the most useful tool for me.

Delicious allows me to easily tag websites and view them from any computer. I like how you are able to network with other educators and obtain useful sites through other Delicious users.

Twitter allows me to connect with people around the world to obtain and share up-to-date information. Quick, Easy, and Addictive.

 3. 3. Ning
 4. 4. Ning

Ning was easy to use and did not take me long to get setup. Ning allows me to upload videos and pictures, create discussion forums, and I can network with other people in my field. It was easy to connect with a lot of people through Ning’s network page.

Lower Merion SD has a district Ning which enables the teachers in the district to communicate and collaborate together. We use the discussion forum the most to share information and discuss how we are incorporating technology into classes.

 5. 5. Twitter
 6. 6. Twitter

I setup Twitter the other year but was only following people. Twitter is a great way to obtain up-to-date information on topics I’m interested in. I do like the idea that you only have 140 characters as that makes it quick to enter a Tweet. I will use Twitter right now for professional growth. I’m just not ready to share with the world what I am doing personally.

Twitter makes it so easy to communicate around the world.

My Twitter username: @hamptob

 7. 7. Delicious
 8. 9. Delicious

Delicious is absolutely wonderful! With the toolbar installed it is easy to add a Tag quickly. I do backup my laptop on a regular basis but it will be nice to know that my bookmarks are in Delicious just in case something happens to my hard drive. It also enables me to access any site I tagged whether I’m on my laptop or another computer.

I think the best part of Delicious is how I can network with others and obtain great sites through them.

 9. 10. Animoto
 10. 11. Animoto Other Tool for PLN

Animoto has been a program I have heard so much about but since I use iMovie or iPhoto to create my movies, I have never really experimented with Animoto. I was glad I spent my time to learn this program to create two movies. I was amazed at how quick and easy this program was to use and I will definitely share this program with my staff.

Animoto creates beautiful and professional looking movies.

Two movies I created:

 11. 12. Moodle/Online Learning

Moodle is a program we use in our district for those teachers who wish to use it. Teachers have found Moodle to be a useful tool in their classes and it enables them to go paperless in their class. With Moodle everything can be placed in one location for both the students and teacher. It allows the students to view just what the teachers wants to show, assignments can be submitted and graded, discussion forums, journal entries, etc. can all be done through Moodle.

After the last class I took with Rich, I saw that he used the Lesson feature and Chat which I never used. Once I learned how to create a lesson and setup a chat, I began showing teachers. One teacher used the chat session at night with students who had questions when studying for the final exam. I not only learn what is in the class but analyze Rich’s Moodle to see if there is anything else I can learn in this program also.

I love using Moodle for learning as it allows me to take an online class and can complete it at my convenience.

 12. 13. Final Thoughts

I really liked taking this course as well as the Wikis, Blog, and Web Publishing course. Both were excellent and I learned a lot. What I loved about every program we used in the Social Media course was how easy it was to setup and use each program. This enabled me to be up and running - QUICKLY. I find that if a program is easy to use, I can get teachers at my school to use them. Can’t wait to share what I have learned.

I am watching on Oprah the Flash Mob Dance “I Gotta Feeling” and it reminds me of Social Media. One person starts dancing, others join in, and eventually an entire crowd is involved in the dance. Social Media keeps growing and will continue to grow as it is here to stay. My 6 year old daughter is already starting to use social media programs online - it will be part of her life as she grows up.
