30. What will be DIFFERENT tomorrow
as a result of today?
2 Action Steps
I understand.
When I was 25, living in basement-Not only living in it, emotionally in it. Jumped around from job to job very unhappy with all of them. 5 different jobs before 26. Unsure what I wanted to do for my next job, much less what would be rewarding for me-or how I would find fulfillment. Hadn’t had it before work wise. Only thing going for me was this cute Hallie berry haircut.
But, I found it and sharing with you some of the ways I did so.
Frame this out: Not pollyana, hear do what you love, money will follow. Yeah right. Hard work!
And some days would rather sleep in and be ind wealthy.
But-as hard as I work, it doesn’t feel like work, it balances and centers me.
AND the good so far outweighs the bad that I barely notice the bad-that’s the feeling we’re going for.
I have that, our clients do as well, 98% satisfaction rate of finding that fulfillment.
Agenda is to be like this guy, hello he is happy right!
This advice is for whether making a change OR staying put, finding more fulfillment OR course correction.
What brings you here?
Right now get out pen, make some notes (HANDOUT)
What category:
Satisfied and in right fit, what we suggest is focus on career management. keep eye on next steps in case (take class ev 6 mos, evaluate where you are with career ev 6 mos, attend assoc mtgs, stay on top of trends).
Somewhat satisfied, you can give this time to look around (about 6 mos I would suggest of thinking and research). One of the steps you can take is make a list-seeing it in black and white helps-of what works in your current job or previous one, and what doesn’t. Good start.
Very unsatisfied, you need to do something now bc the process of brainstorming ideas and also making the transition takes time (defining direction typically takes about 2-3 mos just to define, then implementation timeframe varies 6 mos to year to conduct the job search).
Think about which category you fall into and set a goal.
We saw the bad news with the Gallup poll-Good news is you can have a job you’re engaged in, takes time and effort, balancing act of being practical and passionate, there will be compromise (not pollyana), but it’s possible.
-98% of our clients find their career direction and are excited about their work again.
-70% of our clients make less of a dramatic change than they think they needed to
One of the ways to get started knowing what you want – whether it’s a job change or not – is to write a list of things you want to have in job. 2 ways to do this, think about this now write down in handout.
Likes/Dislikes-Think of something you’ve liked about a job in the past, what was it, write it down? Think of something you’ve disliked in the past, write the opposite down?
Dig underneath passions/dreams-Weekie Watchie ex as a kid. Entertainment, creativity, freedom in owning a biz.
On our ideal career model, which we’ll look at more in a minute, we help clients define what’s fulfilling first.
Cornerstone of everything else.
Key point-Need to identify this first, any ideas why?
-Impacts every other part
-Hardest thing to identify but will sustain you throughout your career ups and downs
-Gives you the greatest clarity about your direction, rather than just looking at talents and skills
Any ideas on how to define it?
How to:
Define what success means to you
Identify interests
Ideal day at work, what are qualities you see in addition to tasks you’re performing (working in a team, working on number alone, planning an event, data analysis)
Identify top 3 career values-client had a trip as an experience. Learned about other cultures (education, being more worldly), challenge to get by in different language (challenge every day), had to plan and budget for it (working with numbers)
Honor them now more-see if you can and it can make a big difference in how you feel and you may not need to move. 70% of time our clients don’t need to make as dramatic a change as they think. Any ideas what a career value might be for you?
If you’d like copy of presentation, drop biz card in or write your name on piece of paper.
These are all elements you need to consider.
-Assessments or books often only cover 2-3 of the pieces, which is why you end up empty handed. Circus clown, basket weaver, window cleaner.
-Helps you be passionate but also practical.
*Btw, if word passion too strong, throw it out. Use enjoyment/something else instead.
*Untrue that follow your passion money will follow, I’ve worked VERY hard. But it doesn’t feel like work, much less so. Truly enjoy it. Balances me.
Fulfillment we talked about.
Enjoyment is this, other tasks you perform outside your main role/task. Career as pie.
These 3 go hand in hand:
Talents/skills-only those you WANT to still use. Strengthsfinder.com assessment. Helps you define what you want and when you define it, gaps in how to get there.
Education-past courses you took you liked? Do you want to leverage it or not? Also gaps.
Experience-past experience you enjoyed? Also gaps. Client at museum docent.
Personality type-make or break (Myers brigges, introvert/extrovert come in) Interacts with
Environment-culture, location, space, values of org
Compensation-not just $
Questions on this? The workbook we have at back table outlines how to dig into each of these pieces, exercise to do so, built around it. Program coming up next week for those wanting to define direction – 4 session webinar using this workbook. With coaching session with me. Fliers at back look like this. Happy to talk to you about it.
We know why this is important, we’ve established an approx timeframe for the process.
Let’s address the difficulties people have with brainstorming long term career options to find the right fit.
Main problem is: It’s Difficult to narrow down options
1) Many factors to consider
Lots of things to consider in finding right fit, career model. Be sure you take time to carefully consider them all and how they fit together. Career tests as ex only tell you some of pieces. People come to me saying took career test told me circus clown. Read book but still unsure.
2) No website with one comprehensive list
Result: overwhelm and stagnation
Prospect called me one year later almost to the day, had done nothing bc overhwlemed about where to start. I’m guessing some of you may feel this way.
As a result people get frustrated, and they stay put and don’t make changes. Bc of fear or something else.
Solution is 2 things –conduct online research, talk to others
Today focus on online research but lets’ touch on brainstorm w others for moment
Dream team and info interviews
Each defined.
Team: Find 2 people to help you with your search. Write down now. Spend x amount of time with them (Ex of Ben)
Info interviews, conduct 3-5 in each area you’re considering. These are short meetings with people in the industries you are interested in to learn more about how to get your foot in the door and if they are the right fit.
More info about info interviews on my blog - links
For more information – do another speech on this topic or a webinar Bethany.
Focus on Online research today bc it’s first step, don’t go out there talking to people in info interviews until you’re armed and dangerous w some information and sense of things
For my clients I suggest and walk them through a 4 step process to help them brainstorm ideas online using the internet. Through online research you can learn about different career paths you may not have known about before. The key here is to stay organized in your search so you do not get lost in the internet or get overwhelmed with information.
This is an Overview of process.
Client catherine interested in owning b and b. online research, found and looked at assoc for b and b owners. Found convetntion coming up and education. By looking at these sites found out in-sitter as possible option. Attending courses to do that not full time but to get her fet weet in industry to see what thinks. Do it few times to see.
Break it down into 30 mins to one hour per week. Write down now:
When you can do this work (Sat am wake up earlier, Wed eve stop at Starbucks on way home from work with your personal computer)
How much time you can devote, 30 mins, one hour (I’d stop at one hour)
With both talking to others and online research. Key is stay organized! Excel sheet and walk through these steps. This sheet has additional tabs for your job search once you get to that point, What to add as tabs in your sheet – on this list.
Overview of sites: are three main categories of sites: General search sites like Google®, career brainstorming sites like www.mypursuit.com, and job boards like www.indeed.com, industry specific sites as well.
Create a list of keywords HANDOUT. This list can include your interests, values, talents, and skills. For instance you might have an interest in lanscaping, gardening, reading, data analysis, management skills. If you highly value education (it could be teaching, mentoring, coaching in some way), value efficiency-operations director or efficiency consultant. And if you have a skill in organizing data, financial analysis, marketing or presentation skills, you can use those as well.
It is not important whether the keyword is one word or a phrase. It can also describe a specific task you like to perform – event planning, database management, market research – as well as a particular industry you are curious about.
Start with the general search sites like Google®, Yahoo®, and Bing®. They will provide all kinds of big picture information –help you cast a wide net, make the fish bowl bigger – so are a great way to begin. You plug your keywords like “career in data analysis” or “jobs in education” and browse through the pages that look like they would be helpful to you. Copy and paste them into a document to re-visit them later in greater depth.
Next, use the brainstorming sites like www.onetcenter.org and www.mypursuit.com to plug in your keywords. Whatever looks appealing to you, copy and paste those pages as well to re-visit later.
Begin to make real at this point-requirements/salary
Additional article about brainstorming-how to generate ideas by combining skills, specific process to do that
Finally, visit the job boards including the ones you prefer www.indeed.com, www.simplyhired.com., and www.linkedin.com. Using your keywords again here can pull up actual job openings (even if they are not in your area, looking outside your area can help you brainstorm ideas) that may be appealing to you. Copy and paste those as well to review them later.

Overview of steps again. Timeframe? Depending on how much time spending each week (one hour week min), give yourself 3 weeks to get a sense of what you’re looking for. Themes in what you’re finding and possible jobs within industries.
Start to think about 2 action items for this week
This is perfect for you if you 1) want to figure out how to make your current job more fuliflling and whether you should stay or go AND 2) if you want to change direction. Flier at the back table in the stand up holder.
