When do we honor our military heroes

  1. 1. “When Is The Right Time To Honor Our Military Heroes?” Ever since we came to America, we have been fighting wars for our peace and forour personal rights. But who were those people who risked their lives for our freedom, and when do we show our thanks by honoring them? Our military heroes do not get the amount of respect they have earned. Why, I askmyself do the people who give so much receive so little? When can I show respect tothose who have been loyal to me and my country since the day I was born? The answer iswhenever you can. Always respect the flag, and mean what you say when you recite thePledge of Allegiance. Pray for those who gave up the luxuries of their lives, the smilesfrom their families, the comfort of their homes, the laughter of their kids, and the sense ofbeing safe in America. I take those things for granted instead of being thankful for whatwe have. When my grandpa was in World War II, he could not bear the thought of beingaway from his family, especially at Christmas. But on December 25th, 1942 he was. Hewrote in his journal how he and his soldiers received a holiday. They marched back totheir mess tents for their party. He also wrote that they were given a paper plate. This wasa luxury instead of eating from a mess kit. Each one got a large steak, two pieces of friedchicken, peas, potatoes and gravy, carrots, lemonade, and Cherry pie. When the soldierswere done eating, a ten cent gift and a slip of paper with a joke on it was given to them. They told each other the jokes to liven up the night. When the party was over, they endedby singing “God Bless America”. My grandpa said even though he was not with hisfamily, he still had a great Christmas. The little things we do can go a long way, and whatwe do will touch our military heroes because they know someone is thinking of them. 1
