  3. 3. <ul><li>Muiden castle was built in the late 13 th century by Count Floris V of Holland. In 1296 Count Floris was taken prisioner and held captive within his own castle. During the attempts to rescue him, his captors fled towards Utrecht, taking the count with them. At some point during this dash for safety the count was murdered. </li></ul>THE CASTLE OF MUIDEN
  4. 4. <ul><li>Built upon a large outcrop of basalt rock high above the city; Edinburgh castle stands like a silent beacon casting a weary eye over the sprawling city below. </li></ul>EDINBURGH CASTLE
  5. 5. <ul><li>The castle drawbridge was a moveable, heavy, wooden bridge which spanned the width of the castle moat or ditch. The drawbridge consisted of a wooden platform with a one hinged side fixed to the castle wall and the other side fixed by ropes or chains. </li></ul>THE DRAWBRIDGE
  6. 6. Catapults <ul><li>CATAPULTS </li></ul><ul><li>Catapults are the most well known siege weapon. They are known to destroy enemy troops. The Ballista- the Ballista was similar to a giant crossbow and worked by using tension. </li></ul>

More about Catapults <ul><li>The Trebuchet – the massive Trebuchet consisted of a lever and a sling capable of hurling stones weighing 200 pounds with a range of up to 300 yards. </li></ul><ul><li>The Mangonel- missiles were launched from a bowl-shaped bucket at the end of one giant arm on the Mangonel. </li></ul><ul><li>The Springald- a type of Ballista. </li></ul><ul><li>The Onager- a type of Mangonel. </li></ul>
  8. 8. NEWARK CASTLE <ul><li>Newark castle was originally a Saxon fortified manor house, founded by King Edward the Elder. In 1073, Robert Bloet, bishop of Lincoln founded an earthwork motte and bailey fortress on the site. </li></ul>
