  2. 2. Africa, a child could carry an average of 20 litres all by themselves. The walk helped us to understand how hard it is for some people in other countries to survive with basic necessities and realise how lucky we are to have easy access to clean water. In total, we raised a staggering £841.93 for Water Aid between the two classes – we are very proud of our children and parents for raising this amount of money but more importantly raising the awareness of such an important cause. Josh Newham, Deputy Head Teacher, Hadley Wood School Firework Plans Autumn is truly upon us which means bonfire night is just around the corner. We are happy to announce that the Hadley Wood Association bonfire and firework event will be returning this year and will be held on Saturday 8th November. As well as the spectacular professional firework display there will be funfair rides, music, food and drink vendors, and an indoor area with face painting. In addition to the traditional bonfire night food there will be a wood fired pizza oven and a French creperie serving food. It is an important event because it is not only fun for young and old, but the only true community event we have open to everyone in the area. Gates will open at 5.30pm for you to come and enjoy the food, drink, and Hadley Wood Primary school. Walking For Water! Ticket numbers will be limited this year so make sure you purchase your tickets in advance, so as not to miss out. Maria Evans Water Aid hopes to provide everybody in the developing world with clean water and sanitation. Some children have to walk approximately 6km a day to collect water- and it isn’t always clean. On the 25th of June, year 4 and 5 at Hadley Wood School went on a 6km walk! The group shared the carrying of 15 litres of water, carrying it one pair at a time. It was a blazing hot day for London but in Africa it wouldn’t be hot at all. We shared the carrying of the water between 60 children but in countries like

Contact Stuart on: 07787 552326 Or email: Profile: Kyran Bracken MBE This magazine has always been reluctant to bother famous local residents, celebrities and sportsmen/sportswomen. It seems intrusive. Sad to say these good intentions failed us in the case of Kyran Bracken though we would have quite understood had he declined. Happily he agreed and I found myself talking to a man who many of us have watched playing rugby for Saracens and England on past Saturday afternoons. A hint of a Scouse accent betrays his early life in Liverpool and the occasional flat vowel, his schooling in the Ribble valley in Lancashire. There it was at the famous Jesuit college Stonyhurst that Kyran, having won entry with a rugby scholarship studied the normal school syllabus and further developed his rugby skills. Taught and coached by none other than Dick Greenwood and Brian Ashton (later the England rugby coach) he joined a long and distinguished list of athletes from Stonyhurst who subsequently represented their country. After leaving school he studied Law at Bristol University and started playing rugby for Bristol and later Saracens. A fast and powerful scrum-half it was not long before he was in the England squad. When the game became professional he opted out of his career in Law and became a full-time rugby player. Recovering from a serious ankle injury in 1993 having being ‘accidentally’ trampled on by Jamie Joseph the New Zealand All Black forward, Kyran continued playing for England on over 50 occasions. These included playing in the 2003 World Cup winning side under Martin Johnson and alongside Wilkinson, Catt, Tindall, Dallaglio Hill and those other famous men including Will Greenwood the son of his erstwhile teacher. In 2004 retiring from rugby he was surprised to receive a call asking him to appear on the ITV show, Dancing on Ice. Never having put on a pair of skates he was initially invited to Alexandra Palace to be assessed by Torvill and Dean. Unimpressed they nevertheless thought he would bring some interest and possible amusement to the show as an ex rugby player. They had not reckoned with Kyran’s athletic abilities nor his long held understanding of how to prepare himself and train for what was essentially a sporting event. Skating with Melanie Lambert he won the competition in front of a TV audience of 10 million. ‘How did the transition from rugby to dancing go down with your old rugby friends’ I asked. A grimace. ‘Well the banter was fairly bad but as the programme went on they became some of my strongest supporters’. His skating experience lead to touring with Torville and Dean’s Dancing on Ice show and several successful business ventures of his own including the Ice Show spectacular ‘The Ice Party’. Now Kyran, Victoria and their three sons live in Hadley Wood. Like many professional sportsmen and indeed many Hadley Wood residents, Kyran continues raising money for charities. He is a long term supporter of the Wooden Spoon Rugby Charity for disadvantaged children as well as the Centre Point Charity for helping homeless young people. We wish him and all his family well. 4. 4. ‘Love Barnet’ opens new shop. This month Chipping Barnet sees an exciting new addition to its uniquely historic and vibrant high street. Number 89 is a community run ‘pop up’ shop showcasing local arts and crafts, drawing on the rich, varied heritage of the area. Opening September 8th Number 89 will be selling a range of high quality giftware and homeware. These include vintage furniture, hand-made items such as jewellery, soft furnishings, haberdashery and decorating materials, children’s 4 clothing, kiln formed glass and decorative ceramics. There will also be argan oil beauty products and collectable vinyl records. Shoppers will be able to enjoy a specially created playlist while they browse. Number 89 has been established by ‘Love Barnet’ in conjunction with the freeholders of the premises, local charity Eleanor Palmer Trust who provide accommodation for the elderly either in residential homes, almshouses or sheltered housing. ‘Love Barnet’ is the brainchild of long-term resident Gail Laser who is joined by Sam Wrightson who moved to Barnet last year but with strong family links to the area. The Barnet Society brought these two committed women together. On behalf of ‘Love Barnet’, Gail Laser tried for three years to secure an empty shop that the local community could open as a temporary boutique to feature work by local artists and artisans. She failed until The Eleanor Palmer Trust generously agreed that she could use their empty shop at 89 Barnet High Street (formerly a branch of Greggs Bakers) for just this purpose. The proviso was that the shop would also promote the Eleanor Palmer Trust and help to introduce the work that it does into the wider community; a pretty small ask she thinks! Using social media, Gail and Sam began an online conversation with Barnet residents, not only asking for help to do up the shop, but also inviting local people “This is where I belong” We are North London and Hertfordshire’s leading Independent Catholic School for Girls aged 11-18. We accept girls from all faiths and traditions. Thanks to Principal David Byrne of Barnet and Southgate College, tutors from the building trade were first on the scene. John Stiles, Master Bricklayer, created a gorgeous fireplace with a little help from his students. Plumbing tutors plumbed in an old butler sink. Local painter and decorator Tim Patrick transformed the shop inside and out and Laura Felicity hung a design of the wallpaper that she will be selling in the shop. The heating and air conditioning units were serviced and upgraded by Southern Electrics Ltd, providing this service for free, as did 1 to 1 Flooring in Barnet High Street who replaced the flooring. Even the Licensing Agreement prepared by local solicitor Steven Hickling of MHHP Law, was created at no cost. ‘Love Barnet’ has been thrilled to have received so much support for this project and is extremely grateful. It is exciting to see how people can be rallied into helping maximise our unique and vibrant high street. Do pop along to Number 89 and have a browse. The shop will be only be open for a few months, but Love Barnet hopes other ‘pop ups’ will follow. 89 High Street, Barnet, EN5 5UR. 5. 5. 5 Older Women’s Community Housing. (OWCH) As evidenced by the bibliography at the end of this article there is considerable interest in the subject of housing for older women living alone. The Office of National Statistics points out that 60% of women over 75 years currently live alone risking isolation and loneliness. A planned housing development in Union St. Barnet has been organized by a pioneering group of local women (Hendon and Finchley Times March 26th 2013). It is a development of 25 social and privately rented houses each divided into one, two or three bedroomed flats. It is built around large gardens, with a common room, laundry and guest quarters. Women living there will have the opportunity to make friends, easily mix with others, eat together if they want to and offer each other support. Angela Ratcliffe who lived in Crescent West Hadley Wood until after her husband Stan died is member of this pioneering group and writes: ‘I must keep you up to date on what is happening to the co-housing scheme in Barnet. We have finally chosen the name for our development. It will be called New Ground, Union Street. This is because we really are breaking new ground in the co-housing field. We will be making an interesting and important addition to the debate on how to tackle some of the issues around age, loneliness, social inclusion and communities that have fragmented leaving families unable to support each other. It is incredible to look back and realise that our efforts to convert the idea of a self supporting community of women home owners and social renters was actually launched by three people sixteen years ago. They were Madeline Levinson, who sadly died before it could be realised, Shirley Meredeen, who will be moving in with us and Maria Brenton, who is still our consultant and will be moving into another co.housing scheme open to both men and women in Muswell Hill. Our site in Barnet is the fourth which we have tried to realise: so you can understand the elation of the moment when we are able to tell the world that we have paid the individual deposits on our flats, the builders have been appointed, and they and the quantity surveyors are at work. We are still recruiting one purchaser and two social housing tenants and we would be delighted to hear from anyone who may be interested. They will find information about us on our web site. or email Angela Ratcliffe Bibliography: We Oldies can look after ourselves. Sharad and Bhati Modi who run the Take 7 Dry Cleaners in Crescent West have received a letter from the Council giving notice of a proposed Change of Use to part ground and lower ground floor. The letter is headed Neighbour Consultation. The proposed plan would change the current usage of the premises from A1 (Retail) to A2 (eg Office, Estate Agent or Financial services etc) and C3 (Dwelling ie residential). The plans which are available to read at Enfield Council’s planning online register can be seen on: http://planningandbuildingcontrol.enfield. Fundamentally the proposed changes would make it difficult for Take 7 to trade safely with the reduced floor space. The views of local residents are being sought. If you object to this proposal please write to Enfield Council, Development Management PO Box 53 Civic Centre Enfield EN1 3XE. The reference numbers are 14/03346/PIA and 14/03344/PIA and the site address which must be quoted is 20 Crescent West, Hadley Wood, Enfield North Barnet EN4 0EJ You can also comment on the application by accessing the website above and adding your views to the register. If you could email a copy of your objection to Mr and Mrs Modi they would find that very helpful. sharadbhati@ The latest date to register an objection is October 8th.

Nominations for positions as Officers should be forwarded to the Chairman Mr G.Sharp. *Councillors Anne-Marie Pearce , Jason Charalambous and Michael Lavender will be at the meeting and will answer questions about local issues and the Enfield Residents Priority Fund allow the Alsatian to roam out of control and off it's leash in a public place. Please take care when walking your dogs, or small children, on Hadley Common. I have noticed an increasing number of Hadley Wood residents think it is acceptable to own an aggressive guard dog in a residential area. This is simply not acceptable and is also unnecessary. A small dog yapping can be an effective deterrent for burglars. If this trend is not curtailed there will be a serious accident involving a child. In the meantime we are mourning the loss of our much loved, and most loving, pet dog. Diane Preston, Pagitts Grove Dear Editor. Dog attack on Hadley Common My beautiful and gentle two year old Chihuahua Dusty was savagely killed recently in an unprovoked attack by a guard dog Alsatian on Hadley Common. The Alsatian came from nowhere, attacked her and shook her like a rag doll until death was inevitable. It also attacked my other Chihuahua, Daisy, but we managed to save her. Both my dogs were on their leads and enjoying their evening walk when the Alsatian attacked them without warning. The Alsatian was not on a leash and it's owner did not appear for several minutes. Clearly it's owner thought it acceptable to Dear Editor.
