Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, head to White House for meeting By Jake Sherman <ul><li>Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid made a trip to the White House on October 7, 2009 to talk strategy concerning Afghanistan. The House Speaker and Senator attended the meeting alone without the other chairmen and leaders, all of whom attended a similar meeting the previous day. The meeting was supposed to help the divide among the house, which is split on a public option for health care and sending more troops to Afghanistan. </li></ul>

Congress Acts to Extend Hate Crimes to Cover Gays By :Jim Abrams <ul><li>Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi addressed the controversial topic of hate crimes including those committed against gays. Pelosi states, “No American should ever have to suffer persecution or violence because of who they are, how they look or what they believe. “ Her words heavily relate to the gay Wyoming college student, Matthew Shepard who was murdered. This hot topic has nearly been approved several times, yet full coordination has never been achieved. This time, the votes for the bill were 281-146, the opposing voters mostly Republicans who did not </li></ul><ul><li>believe the crimes should be categorized as hate </li></ul><ul><li>crimes. Supporters of the bill say prosecution </li></ul><ul><li>should only take place if bodily injury is sustained </li></ul><ul><li>and no minister or protester could be targeted for </li></ul><ul><li>expressing opposition to homosexuality. </li></ul>
  18. 18. Robert C. Byrd returns to manage senate bill. By: LAURIE KELLMAN <ul><li>Robert C. Byrd, oldest living senator returned to congress to manage a $44.1 billion dollar homeland security bill . Byrd had recently been out because of illness yet he came to congress to help. He spoke with a clear voice and sat in his wheel chair. People were afraid that he would soon pass away but amazingly he is alright. </li></ul>
  19. 19. Crack disparity may not be ended By: Ryan Teague Backwith <ul><li>President Obama wants to eliminate the disproportionateness of being caught with crack cocaine opposed to powder cocaine. As of now, the punishment for having five grams of crack receives a five-year prison term. Contrarily, the same sentence is achieved only after obtaining 500 grams of powder cocaine. This ratio is one to 100. This law has affected African Americans negatively. In a 2007 report, the U.S. Sentencing Commission found that 82% of crack offenders were of this race. </li></ul><ul><li>Obama plans to change the law, yet Senate Republicans have voiced their opinions against the remodeling of this law. </li></ul>
