I have been teaching in the Department of English and Program in Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies since 1989, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2001. My early research was on the formation of the classical canon of Noh, the traditional drama of Japan. I have expanded that basic foundation to especially include focuses on the representation of gender, revivals of noncanonical plays, and new Noh, especially new works by women. I am also particularly interested in issues of comparison and translation, and am currently (2009-2013) serving as the principal investigator of a four-member team research project funded by the Japanese government entitled Rhetorical Literacy, examining what h...
