Entry level<br />Generally, the entry level for an average aspirant is the shop floor, as a sales representative (counter sales personnel or sales associate) or a customer care representative because around 60% to 70% of the total retail jobs, are that of attendants. <br />In this position, one is required to have excellent communication skills and be extremely sensitive towards customer needs as the primary job is to interact with walk-in customers and induce them for maximum purchase.<br />For the position of frontline personnel, remuneration ranges from Rs. 50,000 to 1, 00,000 per annum and Rs. 2, 50,000 and above p.a., for the floor manager. A diploma in retail management is an added advantage.<br />

Continue -<br />The industry analysts feel that selling floor is the most critical step from where an aspirant moves on to the higher levels of the corporate hierarchy and acquires a sound understanding of consumer behaviour. <br />Such knowledge pays great dividend in the later stages of one's career when one reaches at the managerial level or, a young MBA could directly get a start from the managerial position and move up the ladder, depending on his performance.<br />For managerial positions, one needs to have an MBA or degree in retail management along with 3 to 6 years of working experience to acquire the position of department manager or the district manager or store manager.<br />Here one would be required to have excellent negotiation skills along with communication skills and one should remain cool headed to deal with the daily pressure of meeting standards. <br />The store managers earn Rs. 3, 00,000 and above per annum. District Mangers draw Rs. 3, 00,000 to 7, 00,000 p.a.. And, to become a Retail Manager, one needs to have 8 to 10 years of experience in retail sector. A retail manager draws around 6, 50,000 to 10, 00,000 p.a.<br />

Various Positions in Retail<br />Some of the opportunities available in this field are as under: (Note: Details of the jobs given below are general in nature rather than being specific since the requirements of the employers differ on basis of the nature, products and the volume of their business. Similarly, the nomenclature of the posts may also vary in some cases.):<br />1) Sales Personnel/Customer Care Executive<br />The success of every retail store depends on its sales team to sell its merchandise and give ultimate satisfaction to the customer making a deal with the store. Because it is the customer that brings business to the store. The job of the sales personnel is to manage customers, help in their buying the better products according to their need and want. The function ofthe sales personnel is to make shopping convenient and pleasurable. To be eligible for this position one should be graduate or undergraduate with willingness to workhard. Fluency in English with proficiency in one or more regional languages is required. Candidates with experience have an upper edge and get better compensation package than freshers.<br />2) Sales Officer<br />The role of sales officer is to enhance sale. Graduate with good public relations ability, communication skills and fair knowledge of geographic region (of the company's HQs and surrounding) and 2-5 years experience in modern trade / retail chain is preferred.<br />
  6. 6. 3) Retail Merchandisers<br />Retail Merchandisers are responsible for ensuring that right products appear in the right store, at the right time, and in the right quantities. This involves accurate forecastingtrends, planningstock levels and monitoring performance. To be eligible for this position, one must be a Graduate or an MBA. Candidates with FMCG background are preferred.<br />4) Assistant Merchandiser<br />He/she is responsible for sourcing, vendor identification/development for a wide range of goods/products. His work area involves number of functions say, comparative analysis, price negotiations and compliances, test certificates & issuing purchase orders. The incumbent must be a graduate, having degree or diploma in relevant discipline.<br />5) Merchandising Manager<br />Merchandising Manager is responsible for buying entire product range for the company. He/she plans and allocates merchandise to all stores nationally based on the analysis of the purchases, sales and stock category, product, color, size and forecast accordingly. Also finalises retail pricing, deciding on product matrix and coordinating with logistics for timely merchandise deliveries to all stores. To be eligible for this position, one should have adequate knowledge of fashion trends and business. Preference is given to the candidates of retail industry or exports.<br />
  7. 7. 6) Retail Market Research Associates<br />One needs to be a graduate with excellent communication skills, fluency in English and must possess a flair for selling. The incumbent must be self-motivated and have the ability to face challenges. Preference is given to candidates who have own conveyance.<br />7)Supervisor<br />For this position, an MBA degree with sound knowledge of computers and ability to handle a large workforce is required. Preference is given to candidates with 2-4 years of experience in retail or service industry.<br />8) Retail Head<br />Retail Head is responsible for all India retail stores - strategising, implementing and monitoring strategic objectives and business plans, creating channel and franchisee/ alliance/ partnerships. An MBA degree with experience in the relevant business is generally required.<br />9) Business Head<br />The role of Business Head is to manage retail operations of a company, evaluation and development of new outlets, dealer network, franchise development, sales, business growth, marketing, etc. The incumbent should be MBA and should be strong in Operations Management, cost reduction & control, handling retail operations.<br />
  8. 8. 10) Unit Head<br />He/she performs the function of handling a large retail store as profit centre head and is responsible for profit generation. To be successful, he or she should be strong in Commercials, Marketing, Administration, HR, Store Management, Inventory, PR. Those having experience in independently handling a large size retail outlet are preferred. Depending on the requirements of the employer, candidate with regional retail experience is also preferred.<br />11) Team Operations Manager<br />Team Operation Manager is responsible for managing a set of 5-6 company-owned shops, enhancing sales & service parameters, analysing performance of respective shops and taking corrective measures. The aspirant for this job should be a Graduate or have a Diploma in Hotel Management with excellent communication skills and a pleasing personality, preferably with experience of retail/ front office in a supervisory role.<br />
