16 follow up on pilot projects in forests vilhar

  1. 1. www.gwpcee.org Proposed Follow-up pilot projects in forests Urša Vilhar, Galia Bardarska, Igor Buksha, Georgi Georgiev, Gintautas Stankunavicius Integrated Drought Management Programme in Central and Eastern Europe
  2. 2. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20152 www.gwpcee.org  Drought has more or less impact on forests in Bulgaria, Slovenia, Lithuania and Ukraine (pilot area) in current climate, 2050 and 2070.  The adaptation measures have to start now to mitigate the negative effect. These measures depend on climate zone, relief and local existing practice. Different forest conditions of these 4 GWP CEE countries determine the specific list of drought adaptation measures which can be used by other countries with similar climate.  Forest demonstration project could be part of IWRM with the positive effect on water quantity and quality in forest watersheds in the period of droughts.  For the implementation of such projects are necessary not only good foresters and GIS specialists, but also specialists on meteorology, hydrology, biology, ecology, water resources etc. Lessons learned from Activity 5.2 „Assessment of drought impact on forests“
  3. 3. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20153 www.gwpcee.org Lessons learned from Activity 5.2 „Assessment of drought impact on forests“ Hazards to forests: large-scale disturbances, related to repeating droughts Forest fires Pests and diseases Invasive alien species
  4. 4. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20154 www.gwpcee.org  Risk assesment of sensitive forest habitat types to large-scale disturbances, related to repeating droughts;  Selection of SMART* forest drought stress indexes – combining climate, vegetation and soil  Mapping of forest drought – combining remote sensing with terrestrial measurements;  Economic valuation of large-scale disturbances in forests, related to repeating droughts *Specific – target a specific area for improvement; Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress; Assignable – specify who will do it; Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources; Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved. Proposed Follow-up pilot projects in forests
  5. 5. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20155 www.gwpcee.org  Development of Drought Management plan for forests:  Best practice guidelies and apropriate forest management measures  Selection of appropriate tree and shrub species for forestation;  Monitoring the impact of logging residues to forest site conditions and forests biodiversity;  Preserving the forest fund at water basin level;  Increasing rotating ages to increase water protection role in water basins;  Restoration of wetlands by promoting native tree and shrub species and supporting their natural regeneration. Proposed Follow-up pilot projects in forests
  6. 6. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20156 www.gwpcee.org  Pilot forest areas  Mountain spruce-beech forests – reduced water retention capacity Proposed Follow-up pilot projects in forests
  7. 7. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20157 www.gwpcee.org  Pilot forest areas  Dinaric fir–beech forests – shallow soils in karst area, increased drought risk Proposed Follow-up pilot projects in forests
  8. 8. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20158 www.gwpcee.org  Pilot forest areas  Lowland flood forests and wetlands – human impacts on water quality and retention capacity, invasive alien species Proposed Follow-up pilot projects in forests
  9. 9. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20159 www.gwpcee.org  Pilot forest areas  Weakened coppice oak forests – increased drought risk, forest fires, insects and diseases Proposed Follow-up pilot projects in forests
  10. 10. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 201510 www.gwpcee.org  Pilot forest areas  Vulnerable agroforestry systems – increased drought risk, changes in functions and ecosystem services of shelterbelts, protective forests… Proposed Follow-up pilot projects in forests
  11. 11. IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 201511 www.gwpcee.org  Pilot forest areas  Pine plantations – outside the natural habitat of Pinus nigra and Pinus sylvestris, increased drought risk, forest fires, insects and diseases Proposed Follow-up pilot projects in forests
