1. MAINE’S BROADBAND
REVOLUTION…IT’S COMING

2. WHAT IS THE THREE RING BINDER?
Maine Fiber Company, Inc.’s Three Ring Binder
represents an investment of more than $32 million
in Maine.
Funding provided through the Broadband
Technology Opportunities Program, with a private
equity match.
The fiber optic network will pass through more than
100 communities in the state, making broadband
Internet more readily accessible to 110,000
households and 600 community anchor institutions,
including hospitals, rural healthcare clinics,
community colleges, University of Maine campuses,
libraries, government facilities, and public safety
departments.
3. PROJECT STATUS
Construction is underway
in multiple areas across the
state.
500 miles of the project will
be completed by the end of
2011.
The entire project will be
completed in 2012.
Completed segments of the
project are already being
used.
5. WASHINGTON COUNTY EDUCATION AND
EMPLOYMENT THROUGH SUSTAINABLE
BROADBAND ADOPTION (WCEESBA)
This pilot program connects farmers and fishermen
to Axiom’s wireless network from a boat, a dock, a
truck, or a blueberry barren.
Education and training blend natural resource-
based industry with 21st century technology.
Programs are being developed for “real-time”
reporting to state and federal governments.
6. WCEESBA, CONT’D.
Ten farmers and ten fishermen were chosen to take
part.
Broadband connections were installed at their
homes/businesses.
Individual learning plans were created for the crews
and their families.
A Toughbook was provided for each
farmer/fisherman.
Computer classes have been started for all
participants.
7. DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM: DOWNEAST
COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
Inaugural class of students
chosen.
A broadband connection was
installed at Downeast
Community Hospital.
The necessary video
conferencing equipment was
ordered and installed.
SimMan, IV Simulator and
Video Microscope were
ordered and installed.
8. THE ADOLESCENCE OF THE INTERNET
1991: Public Internet
Widespread use by 1997
2001: Widespread broadband use
2007: Creation of YouTube
2007: Inception of the iPhone
2008: Streaming of movies with Netflix
9. RAPID RATE OF CHANGE IN
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Telecommunications will continue to shrink physical
distances.
Internet speeds will increase.
With reliable, high speed Internet, many
applications are possible.
High definition video conferencing
Skype-like technologies
Low level, but will be twice as fast in the next five years
10. THE MOBILE REVOLUTION
Cell phone development is
occurring at a rapid rate.
One can do almost anything with a
few keystrokes.
Growing interconnections
