Dead end

 1. 1. DEAD END A Movie Review by Guy Heffernan
 2. 2.

This is the story of people from different cultures thrown together in the mis-moch of lower east side Manhattan, in 1937.

It’s what happens when the rich and the poor live in such a close proximity they can’t help but run into each other.

You have the poor sister trying to keep her younger brother from the long arm of the law.

And there’s the struggling architect looking for a job as he gets nothing but slammed doors.

Then you have the gangsters returning to the old neighborhood, looking for an easy score.

 3. 3.

This is a pretty good story of good vs. evil, but what makes it stand out is the casting.

Bogart as the returning gangster, looking for his x-girlfriend, played by the fabulous Claire Trevor, who became a prostitute while waiting for Bogie to get out of prison. Bogart was honing his skills to become one of the greatest actors of all, and the two were later teamed in one of the all time greats “Key Largo” with Edward G. Robinson and Lionel Barrymore, Trevor received an Oscar for best supporting actress, deservedly so.

 4. 4.

You also have Joel McCrea (who never played a bad guy in his live) as the architect. He has a romantic thing between the poor sister and a rich girl from the same neighborhood.

They also used The Bowery Boys for local color. And there’s some great character actors like Ward Bond as the doorman, and Marjorie Main, as the gangsters mother who as much as disowns her gangsters son.

This is a good story with a great cast and is very realistic to the times and lives of lower east side of N.Y.C.
