  2. 2. Perhaps you have been growing increasingly concerned as of late
  3. 3. about global environmental issues
  4. 4. like pollution
  5. 5. loss of biodiversity
  6. 6. climate change
  7. 7. or conflict over scarce natural resources
  8. 8. or more domestic matters
  9. 9. like rampant commercialism and high debt levels
  10. 10. or the perils of increased social isolation
  11. 11. All these complex problems
  12. 12. Are being fueled in large part by a common force
  13. 13. consumption - the process by which we accumulate more stuff
  14. 14. Sure, we can blame advertisers for tempting us
  15. 15. but knowing how many wonderful things there are to be had
  16. 16.   can we fault people for wanting experience them all?
  17. 17. However, as any economist will tell you, we are at an impasse
  18. 18. these limitless desires
  19. 19. are confronted by a fundamental scarcity of resources
  20. 20. everyone cannot simultaneously enjoy what some already have
  21. 21. those resource-intensive luxuries that the rich take for granted
  22. 22. Humanity aspiring to this dream of unbridled material prosperity will beget nightmares because we cannot yet achieve it in a sustainable fashion. But surely you've heard enough about this dilemma ...
  23. 23. and have gotten on board the new green bandwagon
  24. 24. maybe not... perhaps these arguments aren't compelling
  25. 25. or now you just feel so fatalistic about the future
  26. 26. that you're verging on something like eco-nihilism
  27. 27. Take heart in this idea: you can have more fun with less stuff
  28. 28. simply by sharing what you already have with others
  29. 29. This may seem childish at first, but just think about it...
  30. 30. how many things in your room have you not touched in months?
  31. 31. and don't forget about all the other stuff in storage
  32. 32. now think about all your friends' rooms
  33. 33. To put it simply
