The Treasure of Lemon Brown

  2. 2. About the Author <ul><li>Walter Dean Myers was born in West Virginia in 1937 but spent most of his childhood and young adult life in Harlem. He was raised by foster parents and remembers a happy but unstable life. Suffering with a speech impairment let him develop a habit of writing poetry and short stories and acquired an early love of reading. In 1954 he quit high school and joined the army. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Main Characters <ul><li>Lemon Brown - An old man who lives in a old building. He is known for his treasure. </li></ul><ul><li>Greg - A young boy who lives in the street. </li></ul><ul><li>Greg’s father - He is mad at Greg for his bad grades. </li></ul><ul><li>Thugs - The people who wanted to steal Lemon Brown’s treasure. </li></ul><ul><li>Setting – The streets, and the abandoned building. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Synopsis <ul><li>The story starts off on Greg’s porch thinking about what happened that day. The day started off with Greg’s father scolding him about his bad grades in school. He complains that Greg is not reaching his full potential and that when he was one year younger than Greg, he had to quit school to work full time. Greg walks away into the streets and sees an abandoned building open. He goes in and meets Lemon Brown. Some thugs try to steal Lemon Brown’s famous “treasure” but he’d rather die. Greg and Lemon are able to avoid the thugs by Lemon brown taking a stick and whacking the floor with it to make noise. The thugs get scared and run out of the building. Lemon tells Greg about his treasure. It is a harmonica and a couple of newspaper clippings. It belonged to his son who died in a war. Greg then realizes how important his “treasure” was. It was his only memory of his son. </li></ul>

Ajar (pg533) </li></ul><ul><li>Definition - Neither entirely open nor entirely shut. </li></ul><ul><li>Sentence from text – “Some of the guys had held an impromptu checker and tournament there the week before, and Greg had noticed that the door, once boarded over, had been slightly ajar .” </li></ul><ul><li>Part of speech- Adjective, adverb </li></ul><ul><li>Synonyms -open, unclosed, unlatched, unshut </li></ul><ul><li>Antonyms- closed </li></ul><ul><li>Original Sentence – The door was ajar soon as Jazzi walked in. </li></ul>

Scalawags (pg538) </li></ul><ul><li>Definition –People who cause trouble; a rascal. </li></ul><ul><li>Sentence from text – “You Ok for a youngster,” the old man said as he tied the strings around his legs, better than those scalawags what come here looking for my treasure. </li></ul><ul><li>Part of speech- noun. </li></ul><ul><li>Synonyms - scamp, caitiff, miscreant. </li></ul><ul><li>Original Sentence – Alondra hates to be called a scalawag but she is!! lol). </li></ul>
