Online Scientific Method Forensics 2009

 1. 1. Niles West Biology Unit: Scientific Method Forensic Science
 2. 2. Unit Objectives:

Identify questions and concepts that guide scientific investigations.

Design and conduct scientific investigations.

Use technology and mathematics to improve investigations and communications.

 3. 3. Unit Objectives Continued:

Formulate and revise scientific explanations and models using logic and evidence.

Recognize and analyze alternative explanations and models.

 4. 4. Unit Objectives Continued:

Communicate and defend a scientific argument.

Distinguish between living and nonliving things.

 5. 5. Scientific Method

Definition:

A systematic approach to solving a problem by discovering knowledge, investigating a phenomenon, verifying and integrating previous knowledge.

 6. 6. Scientific Method Steps:

Identifying the problem to solve

Formulating a hypothesis

Testing the hypothesis

Gathering and analyzing data

Making conclusions

 7. 7. What IS Forensic Science?

Forensic science is the process of using science to resolve legal issues. This is done by applying scientific principles to matters in which the law has become involved.

 8. 8. First Assignment

Use the glogster web site:

Use the glogster instructions and put together an interactive glog page.

This interactive poster will explain the forensic occupation you picked.

It will also be thematic to the forensic occupation you picked.

.

GLOG WEB SITE
 9. 9. First Assignment continued

Your glog will also include and explanation as to how the scientific method would be used in this occupation.

 10. 10. First Assignment cont.

At glogster.com it explains that you are able to hyper link anything you put on your poster.

Therefore, your poster becomes an intricate part at explaining your forensic occupation.

Pictures can lead to other web sites or another glog to explain more! Follow the quick tutorial to get the hang of it before you finalize your interactive poster.

 11. 11. First Assignment cont.

Helpful websites on your occupational search:

Website 1 Website 2 Website 3 Website 4
 12. 12. Second Assignment:

Post your Glog on my discussion board.

Respond to 2 (two) other student’s glogg

For each response answer the following:

What did you find interesting?

What did like about the glogg?

How does the occupation use the S.M.?

Discussion Connect
 13. 13. Online Investigations:

Ink Chromatography

Fingerprint Analysis

Shoe & Hair Analysis

Blood Splatter Analysis

 14. 14. Online Investigations: Ink Chromatography

Virtual Lab – Click the play button and follow the instructions.

Do it at home! Try to match different brands. What do the different patterns tell you about the same color?

Respond to the experience in the general discussion room!

 15. 15. Online Investigations: Fingerprint Analysis

Virtual Lab – After clicking on the link go to the 1 st floor and put the cursor on fingerprinting and follow the prompts.

Try it at home! Respond to the experience in the general discussion room !

 16. 16. Online Investigation: Hair and Shoe Analysis

Virtual Lab : After clicking on the hyperlink move the cursor to the floor plan and click on the third floor. Move the cursor to the hair and shoe analysis prompt and follow the instructions for the lab.

CSI: NY Episode : select an episode an watch how hair/shoe evidence is analyzed.

 17. 17. Online Investigation: Blood Splatter Analysis

Virtual Lab : Start by clicking on “virtual lab”. After arriving to the floor plan click on the third floor. Move the cursor to blood splatter and follow the prompts for the lab.

DNA analysis : Start by clicking on “DNA analysis”. Then start with part 1 and read the story to solve the crime using DNA evidence.

CSI Episode :select an episode an watch how blood spatter is analyzed.

 18. 18. Putting It All Together

You solve the virtual crime using forensic techniques. Click on this interactive link to begin solving this case. Report the crime you solved and how you solved to the discussion board http://groups.google.com/group/ biology-niles-west

Write down the scientific method steps you use while solving the case.

 19. 19. Putting It All Together: Assessment

You create the crime! For this assignment I will grade you on your creativity with the crime, how you use implement 3 out the 4 forensic techniques discussed and lastly how you use the scientific method in solving the crime.

Use a creative medium to present your crime and solution and drop in my blackboard drop box.

 20. 20. Putting It All Together: Assessment Part 2

Lastly, attach your project to my discussion board [email_address]

All members of the class must comment on what they liked from two classmates assignments and mention how the person implemented the scientific method in the crime scene.

 21. 21. Assessment: Quiz

Take the Quiz http://www.mystudiyo.com/ch/a92261/go Use this site if you want to make it competitive and compare scores and to see you got the highest with the least amount of tries.

See rubric on the next slide.
