Michael <ul><li>Michael is a 17 year old sophomore in H.S. </li></ul><ul><li>He lives with a traditional family </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Father, mother, and two sisters (18 & 15) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Parents both work (his mother works in special education) </li></ul><ul><li>One sister is a senior and the other a freshman </li></ul>
  3. 3. Michael – Educational History <ul><li>Diagnosed around 3 years old with autism </li></ul><ul><li>Switched schools a few times early on due to lack of services available </li></ul><ul><li>Has been at his current school system since the 6 th grade </li></ul>

Educational History – cont. <ul><li>At 13 the school requested he attend the high school </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Parents believe this was one of the best decisions they had ever made </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>He was larger than his peers so his size and development was similar to the high school students </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Had P.E. everyday, interacted, and lost weight </li></ul></ul>

Educational History – cont. <ul><li>High School </li></ul><ul><ul><li>He is well liked in school </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Most students stick up for him because they have come to know him through his sisters </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>He participates in some general education classes such as choir where a peer takes him to choir class and back </li></ul></ul>
  6. 6. Michael - Strengths <ul><li>Michael is very good at solving problems </li></ul><ul><ul><li>He likes to fix electronics </li></ul></ul><ul><li>He works well on computers and other electronic devices </li></ul><ul><li>He enjoys pleasing others and will go out of his way to do so </li></ul>

Michael – Academic Skills and Involvement <ul><li>Enjoys choir </li></ul><ul><ul><li>His sisters are great supports at school, but he can get worked up and excited to be around them </li></ul></ul><ul><li>He loves his job at the school library stacking books </li></ul><ul><li>He has functional math skills </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Sometimes he needs support making sense of numbers </li></ul></ul>
  13. 13. Michael Academic Skills and Involvement <ul><li>He loves reading books </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Dr. Seuss are his favorites </li></ul></ul><ul><li>He likes performing any tasks that have to do with technology </li></ul>
  14. 14. Michael – Motor and Mobility Skills <ul><li>He has good mobility and motor skills </li></ul><ul><ul><li>He had surgery to correct bowing when he was younger that has helped his legs </li></ul></ul>

Michael – Teaching Strategies and Supports <ul><li>His family is very involved with him </li></ul><ul><ul><li>His mother and father are very knowledgeable about process and are active participants in his education </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>His sisters are equally involved and are great supports at school </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Their involvement increases his social skills and relationships through interactions with their friends </li></ul></ul></ul>

Michael – Teaching Strategies and Supports <ul><li>He is no longer on medication for aggression </li></ul><ul><ul><li>He has improved about self-regulating his behavior </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If he becomes upset have him walk to calm him down </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Add as much technology possible </li></ul><ul><ul><li>He loves working on computers and is more engaged when activities involve them </li></ul></ul>

Michael – Teaching Strategies and Supports <ul><li>He can become frustrated when working on difficult tasks </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Some support may be needed to help him work through them </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>However, he does like solving problems, so letting him stay involved is important </li></ul></ul>

Family Involvement <ul><li>Keep the family involved in his progress, successes, and difficulties </li></ul><ul><ul><li>They are great about continuing his education at home </li></ul></ul><ul><li>They are concerned about his transition from high school to post-education </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Continue to work with them to identify goals and solutions </li></ul></ul>
