Assignment 1 Paper

 1. 1. Jaime South
Fall 2009
AC 302 – Management Information Systems
Assignment 1: Business Technology
September 17, 2009
Introduction:
My name is Jaime South, and I am an accounting major. The business chosen for this assignment is a wholesale plant nursery. This assignment made me more aware of the decisions consumers have to make on hardware, software, and accessories when purchasing a computer for the startup of a small business.
Business Description:
The imaginary business is a wholesale nursery called South Wholesale Nursery. There are a lot of supplies needed for this type of business such as hoses, buckets, shovels, gloves, clippers, etc. A computer and software are also necessary items for a business like this. Through research, it was learned that a successful nursery must be equipped with a software program that can keep up with the inventory, track sales, manage customer contacts, have merchant account support to accept credit card payments, do budgeting and estimates, manage payroll, and business tax reporting.
Technology Requirements:
After going from one webpage to another comparing and contrasting different accounting programs available to small business owners, it was decided that Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2009 was to be used. The decision was easy. Sage BusinessVision Accounting Software: Small Business Edition had been looked over; but ultimately, the Microsoft package was chosen because of its integration with other basic programs such as Excel, Word, etc. With this package, the business could easily move into the present time with ecommerce. It also offered a more in-depth view of the business. Plus, as will be seen in the Feature Comparison Table, both computers offered versions of Microsoft Office, which would make the Microsoft package more appealing than any other.
Since the appropriate software for the business had been found, a computer was now needed. The two computers the decision was narrowed down to were the Macbook and the Dell Vostro 1720. The following is a table of what was researched on these models.
Feature Comparison Table:
Features of 2 Computer SystemsDell Vostro 1720MacBookKeyboardAdjacent 10 key numeric keypadStandard with NO keypadProcessors2.20 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6670 (2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 DuoFeatures of 2 Computer SystemsDell Vostro 1720MacBookMemory3 GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800 MHz, 2 DIMM 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM – 2x2 GBHard Drive 250 GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor250 GB Serial ATA drive @ 5400 RPMScreen17” WXGA + Anti-Glare LED Display13”Ports6 USB 2.0 ports2 USB 2.0 portsSecurity HardwareNo security hardware installedNo security hardware mentionedWireless CardsDell Wireless 1397 802.11 b/g Mini CardNo wireless cards mentionedOffice SoftwareMicrosoft Office Basic 2007Microsoft Office Mac 2008 – Home & Student EditionSecurity SoftwareNorton 360 3.0 complete package & Norton Internet Security 2009 15 month subscriptionNo security software mentionedOptical Drive8x DVD +/- RW with double- layer DVD +/- R write capability, Roxio and Cyberlink PowerDVD DX 8.1Superdrive 8x (DVD+/- R DL/DVD+/- RW/CD-RW)Warranty & Service1 Year ProSupport for End Users and 1 Year NBD On-site ServiceNot enough money left over for this!PrinterDell 968 All-in-One with 1 year limited warrantyHP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One Printer, Scanner, CopierPrice$1488 with $204 rebate = $1284$1428.90 and NO rebate
Recommendations & Conclusions:
After charting and reviewing the information gathered on these two models, it was decided that the computer this business needed was the Dell Vostro 1720. One of the main deciding points was the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard. It is considered a valuable tool on personal computers and absolutely essential on business computers. Software packages included in the price are Microsoft Office Basic 2007 and Norton 360 3.0 security software. In both options a printer was purchased with the computer. With a $1500 budget, it was impossible to include a warranty and a printer when purchasing the MacBook; therefore, only a printer was purchased as it was deemed necessary for the startup of the business. After thorough examination, it seemed like more products and services were available with the Dell than with the MacBook, and it was also more affordable. From this information, the Dell Vostro 1720 is recommended with the software in the table above.
