Computer Lab Costs

  1. 1. Cost of Maintaining a Computer Lab THEODY B. SAYCO
  2. 2. Compute Lab Facts I Q: What services does the computer lab assista nt provide to students and the community? A: The Computer Lab is available to provide information regarding the operation of the Computer Labs. The Computer Lab staff is trained to help students open, save and print documents from the computer. I Q: What software is available on the computers in the Computer Lab? A: A list of available software installed in the computers must be present in the lab premises.
  3. 3. Compute Lab Facts I Q: How much does it cost to print? A: The cost of printing is P3.0 to P 15 per page (B/ W and Colored).
  4. 4. Compute Lab Facts I Q: How much does it cost to print? A: The cost of printing is P3.0 to P 15 per page (B/ W and Colored).
  5. 5. Compute Lab Facts I Q. What are the hours for the Computer Lab? A: The hours of operation for the Computer Lab are as follows: Monday thru Friday 7:00am - 7:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, and Sunday 10:00am — 5:00pm. I Q: Is anyone allowed to use the Computer Lab? A: The Computer Lab is only available for currently enrolled students during weekdays and weekends and to members of the community during Saturdays and Sundays.
  6. 6. Compute Lab Facts I Q: Does the Computer Lab offer any services for students with disabilities? A: If Yes. The Computer Lab should have an ADA compliant workstation with the following hardware and software: computer with 17in monitor, scanner, Braille printer, CCTV, Kurzweil 3000, Duxbury, ZoomText 8.1, Dragon Naturally Speaking 6.0, and JAWS 5.0.
  7. 7. Computer Lab Costs I Power Rating — Computer - 350 watts — Ordinary Computer Monitor 160 watts — Inkjet Printer - 4.6 watts — Monitor (LCD) - 2.6 watts - Cell phone battery charger - 1.6 watts — Cordless drill battery charger - 2.4 watts - LCD Projector 2000 lumens approx 3 watts
  8. 8. Computer Lab Costs I Power Rating — Laser Printer 650 watts — Daylight 20 — 40 watts — Electric Orbit Fan - 150 - 250 watts —Air conditioning Unit 1 hp 746 watts — Vacuum Cleaner 600 — 1500 watts
  9. 9. How to Compute Energy I The Cost of Energy is what we pay for when we use electricity - Cost of Energy is paid per Kw-hr of use — One Kw-Hr is equivalent to 1000 watts used continuously for 1 hour. — Average Cost per Kw-Hr is about P8.00
  10. 10. Sample Computation I Let us say we have: — 21 computers consuming 350 watts @. = 7350w — 2 — 2 hp Air Conditioning Units = 1492w — 6 - 40 watt Fluorescent Lamps = 240w — 1 — Laser Printer = 650w subtotal 9732w
  11. 11. Cost of Computer Lab Operation I Cost of Energy Consumption I Internet Connection I Maintenance Cost I Cost of Supplies and Replacement Parts I Investment Costs I Cost of Facilitation (Salaries)
  12. 12. Cost of Energy I Power Rating — Computer - 350 watts — Ordinary Computer Monitor 160 watts — Inkjet Printer - 4.6 watts — Monitor (LCD) - 2.6 watts - Cell phone battery charger - 1.6 watts — Cordless drill battery charger - 2.4 watts - LCD Projector 2000 lumens approx 3 watts
  13. 13. Computer Lab Costs I Power Rating — Laser Printer 650 watts — Daylight 20 — 40 watts — Electric Orbit Fan - 150 - 250 watts —Air conditioning Unit 1 hp 746 watts — Vacuum Cleaner 600 — 1500 watts
  14. 14. How to Compute Energy I The Cost of Energy is what we pay for when we use electricity - Cost of Energy is paid per Kw-Hr of use — One Kw-Hr is equivalent to 1000 watts used continuously for 1 hour. — Average Cost per Kw-Hr is about P5.75
  15. 15. Sample Computation I Let us say we have: — 21 computers consuming 350 watts @. = 7350w — 2 — 2 hp Air Conditioning Units = 1492w - 6 - 40 watt Fluorescent Lamps = 240w — 1 — Laser Printer = 650w Subtotal 9732w This would mean that for 1 hour of operation, we consume 9.732 Kw of power/ hr: P 55.95/hr Or the Cost of Energy is P55.95 per hour
  16. 16. Sample Computation I Assumptions: — We operate 10 hours a day continously. — Six days a Week I Our daily expenses for operation will be — P 55.95 per hour x 10 hrs = P 559.50 per day — P559.50 per day x 5 days = P2,797.50 per wk or about P 11,190 per month or P 134,280 per year.
  17. 17. Internet Connection I DSL Wireless (384 kbps) — Ranges from P 999 + vat = P1118.88 per month I Cable Internet (768 — 2 Mbps) — P 999 + vat per month — P 4000 + vat per month ( with CIR) I Telephone Charges — P 385 to 600 per month
  18. 18. Maintenance Costs I Maintenance via Technician roughly — P 250 - 300 per pc I Major Repair — P 500 - P 5000 per pc I Rule of Thumb — If Cost of Repair is more than 33 °/ o of the Original Cost then better to replace the part than have it repaired. - Example: if Cost of repairing a monitor is P 1500 (Original Price P4000); better to buy a new monitor for the repaired monitor is likely to bogged down again within 1 -6 months.
  19. 19. Maintenance Costs I PC Cleaning — P 150 per terminal — PCs should be Cleaned at least 6 times a year. I Virus Cleaning — Depends on Severity — P 150 — 300 per terminal I Software Installation — Server P3000 — P 5000 — Terminal P 800 per terminal
  20. 20. Costs of Supplies and Replacements 1 Cable replacement — P 15 per meter + P6 per UTP terminal — Labor is 100 per terminal 1 Keyboard and Mouse Replacement — Keyboard P 150 — 350 — Mouse P 50 - P150 — Sound Card P 250 - up — Network Card P 175 to 2000 (Wireless) - Power Supply P 900 to 1200 — Power Cord P 100 - 150
  21. 21. Investment Costs I A computer life span is estimated to be 3 years or less. I Average Cost of Computer is P40,000.00 I Average Cost of a Computer Lab (21 pc) is around P 1.0 to 1.5 M I Average Cost per year = P23,809 per terminal/ year I So there is a need for us to prolong the life of our computers as long as possible
  22. 22. Cost of Facilitation I Salaries of Computer Lab Managers may range from P6000 to 8000 per month I Salary of Teacher Maintaining the lab I Salary of Technician
