  2. 2. What is ?<br />Twitter is a social networking site that enables users to communicate through text-based posts of up to 140 characters.<br />Since its launch in 2006, Twitter is now home to over 100 million users worldwide.<br />

Twitter Terms to Know<br />Tweets- status updates.<br />@Replies- you can direct a Tweet at a specific Twitter user.<br />Intended to make communication between users easier.<br />#Hashtags- Ideal for “Trending Topics”.<br />Join the world-wide conversation.<br />DM- direct message.<br />Ability to send private messages.<br />
  4. 4. Why is Twitter Beneficial to PR Professionals?<br />Keeping others informed<br />Monitoring others<br />Activism<br />Educate!<br />
  5. 5. Keep Others Informed!<br />Keep those who follow you informed on your current activity, thoughts, etc.<br />If you are representing an organization, Twitter is a great tool to keep others “in the know” about what is going on inside and outside of that organization. <br />

Monitor with Twitter<br />Twitter allows users to monitor what others are saying.<br />Hashtags (#example) allow users to search what others are saying about their organization.<br />Search.twitter allows for easy access to others recent tweets<br />Monitor and respond!<br />Twitter allows users to respond to what people are saying, in a more timely fashion than other media outlets. <br />
  7. 7. Activism<br />Twitter allows users to be ACTIVE!<br />If something negative is being said about your organization, users can be active and take a stand.<br />Activism through Twitter can often solve problems before they snowball. <br />
  8. 8. A PR Tool<br />How?<br />Conversation engagement: users can become a part of the social media conversation.<br />Again, helps with monitoring and activism.<br />Promotion!<br />Promote products, services, and ideas from/by your organization. <br />
  9. 9. Educate!<br />Educate others on your organization.<br />Keep the public informed about your organization, special promotions, or any other interesting information that normally wouldn’t be shared.<br />

Quick Step Guide to Getting Started<br />Create a username!<br />Search and “follow” as many PR related accounts as possible.<br />Observing others’ Tweets related to PR will help you get started.<br />Get active!<br />Start your Twitter presence! Remember, it’s extremely beneficial to have a strong presence from the beginning.<br />
