How Does Desertification Effect Africa

 1. 1. How Does Desertification Affect Africa? By Grace Hershey
 2. 2. Vocabulary

Dryland: Semi-arid to arid lands that receive little water

Degradation: being reduced in quality or value

Salinization: the build up of salt in the soil

Arid: extremely dry

Vegetation: the plants or plant life of a place

 3. 3. Why did I choose this topic?

I chose desertification because it sounded interesting and I instantly had questions about it that I wanted to find answers to.

 4. 4. What I already knew

I didn’t know much about desertification when I started this project but I did know that desertification was when land was turned into a desert.

 5. 5. What is Desertification?

Desertification occurs when drylands are persistently being degraded.

10 - 20% of drylands are degraded and facing desertification

Desertification could be one of today’s biggest environmental challenges

 6. 6. What Causes Desertification?

The main cause is the removal of vegetation (often for wood).

Incorrect irrigation can cause salinization

Accidental burning

Policies that allow and/or encourage land clearing

Drought

Climate shifts

Growing population

poverty

 7. 7. Where, in Africa, is Desertification Occurring?

Desertification is a major threat in the Sahel and areas below the Sahara.

Still desertification can occur in any of the 66% of Africa that is arid

Much of the agricultural land has already been degraded to some degree.

 8. 8. How fast does desertification spread?

The Sahara desert is expanding about 30 miles each year.

 9. 9. How does Desertification affect Africa?

Migration: When The land people live on becomes desert and people can no longer farm they move away to more fertile land causing over-population and other problems in certain areas

Poverty/lack of food: As the land faces desertification and becomes degraded it is less fertile and cannot be used for farming anymore.

 10. 10. How does desertification affect Africa (cont.)

Poverty/lack of food (cont.): As crops die, animals and cattle that need the plants die. Without these thing to sell people go into poverty or even starve. It is estimated if today's degradation patterns continue, by the year 2025 Africa will only have enough food for 25% of it’s population.

Death: Lack of food and money issues will cause death to many people
