  2. 2. When the Indianapolis was sunk <ul><li>At 12:14 a.m. on July 30, 1945 the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea </li></ul><ul><li>It completely sank in 12 minutes </li></ul>

  4. 4. The Crew on Board <ul><li>From the 1,196 men on board the USS Indianapolis around 300 went down with the ship </li></ul><ul><li>Survivors were left in shark infested waters900 men survived the torpedo attack </li></ul><ul><li>By the time they were discovered, only 300 survived </li></ul>

How the Indianapolis was attacked <ul><li>Between Guam and the Leyte gulf the Indianapolis was hit by two torpedoes out of the six that were fired </li></ul><ul><li>A submarine called the I-58 fired them. </li></ul><ul><li>The first torpedo destroyed the bow, the second was around a fuel tank and a powder magazine near mid-ship. </li></ul>

Captain Charles McVay <ul><li>Ordered his ship to stop zigzagging and head straight for the island of Leyte </li></ul><ul><li>The zigzagging technique makes ships less vulnerable to the attack </li></ul><ul><li>Thought that the ship was alone in the dark waters of the west Pacific </li></ul><ul><li>Lived through both the attack and the 5 five afterwards waiting for rescue </li></ul>

Reaction of the US <ul><li>The public announcement about the loss of the Indianapolis was delayed 2 week. </li></ul><ul><li>President Truman hoping that it would be overshadowed by the news of the Japanese surrender. </li></ul><ul><li>The Navy however began searching for who was responsible. </li></ul>
