PLA-child Right <ul><li>Aladdin’s magic lamp 1.1 Divide the participants into groups of four or five 1.2 Each group is given a paper with Aladdin’s lantern drawn on it 1.3 Every group must write what they would want from the magic lantern and then present it to the whole group 1.4 Discuss with the group which of the wishes are essential for our daily existence, what is the distinction between needs (necessities) and wants (luxuries), what would happen if we don’t get our needs, do you know people in your environment that don’t get their needs? End the discussion emphasising the importance of rights towards ensuring the fulfilment of needs. </li></ul>

CHILD RIGHT <ul><li>Divide the group into small groups </li></ul><ul><li>Make them think that they have children in the community </li></ul><ul><li>What rights do these children have?, think of rights in each of the follwing categories </li></ul><ul><li>Survival </li></ul><ul><li>Protection </li></ul><ul><li>Developmental </li></ul><ul><li>Participation </li></ul><ul><li>How are these rights met within the family and the community? </li></ul><ul><li>One person record the group’s responses to report back to larger group </li></ul>
  4. 29. What is RIGHT? <ul><li>Your rights are about what you are allowed to do, and what the people responsible for you have to do for you to make sure you are happy, healthy and safe. Of course you also have responsibilities towards other children and adults, to make sure they get their rights. </li></ul>
  5. 30. WHAT IS CRC? <ul><li>CHILD RIGHT CONVENTION </li></ul><ul><li>an agreement between countries to obey the same law. </li></ul><ul><li>Each article of the Convention explains one of child rights. </li></ul><ul><li>It has 54 articles - 41 articles are rights </li></ul>

Why we need to know about rights of the children ? <ul><li>To protect the child </li></ul><ul><li>To support the survival of the child- Medical </li></ul><ul><li>To know the roles that children play in the communities </li></ul><ul><li>To be able to understand that children have emotions </li></ul><ul><li>To know what children’s emotions are </li></ul><ul><li>To understand the developmental perspective of the child in terms of what a baby needs versus what a 10 years needs and has a right to </li></ul><ul><li>To understand the social need of the child </li></ul><ul><li>To help one to identify the most vulnerable – the one with most violation of rights </li></ul><ul><li>To justify asking for help putting children as priority in terms of allocation of resources </li></ul><ul><li>To support workers when soliciting for orphans and vulnerable children </li></ul>

  8. 33. DEFINITION- ADOCACY <ul><li>Advocacy is the pursuit of influencing outcomes including policy and resource allocation decisions within political, economic and social systems and institutions that directly affect people's lives” </li></ul>

Factors that make it difficult to implement the UN Convection on the Child rights <ul><li>Child Poverty </li></ul><ul><li>Traditional practices that do not respect children </li></ul><ul><li>Insufficient support for working parents </li></ul><ul><li>Violence against children, particularly corporal punishment and sexual abuse </li></ul><ul><li>Insufficient information about and dissemination of the UN convention on the rights of the child </li></ul><ul><li>The lack of the youth participation in communities and decision making as this threatens traditional ideas about a child’s place to be seen but not heard </li></ul><ul><li>Child exploitation including child labour </li></ul><ul><li>Conflict and war </li></ul><ul><li>The lack of information and education about the need to give priority to the needs of the children </li></ul>
