  5. 5. The Start of World War I <ul><li>World war I started in the Balkans. </li></ul><ul><li>On June 28, 1914, archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife were murdered in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. </li></ul>
  6. 6. America Enters the War <ul><li>At the start of World War I, President Wilson had declared the neutrality of the United States. </li></ul><ul><li>The sinking of the Lusitania and other German actions against civilians drew American sympathies to the Allies. </li></ul>
